Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Leak Points to 200MP Periscope and Dual-Layer OLED

Huawei is getting ready for its next Mate flagship series, and the Mate 90 Pro Max is already looking like a serious hardware upgrade. New leaks point to a new Kirin 9050 Pro chip, a dual-layer OLED display and a 200MP periscope camera.

None of these details are official yet however. Still, the leak gives us a good idea of what Huawei may be planning for its top Mate 90 model.

The Mate 90 Pro Max is expected to use Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro chip. The processor is said to be reserved for the top model, while the other Mate 90 phones could use older Kirin chips with smaller upgrades.

That would make the Pro Max more than just a larger version of the standard model. Huawei appears to be giving it a clear hardware advantage.

The new chip is also expected to bring better performance and power use. We will need real benchmarks to see how big the jump is, though.

The display may be one of the biggest upgrades.

The Mate 90 Pro Max is tipped to use a dual-layer OLED panel. Instead of one layer that produces light, this type of screen uses two. That can help produce much higher brightness while keeping power use under control.

Leaks point to peak brightness of up to 10,000 nits for the Mate 90 Pro and Pro Max. The top RS model could reportedly go even higher.

If that number is correct, the display should be much easier to see in bright sunlight. There is one important detail, though. Peak brightness figures can use different test methods, so we will need proper measurements before comparing the Mate 90 Pro Max with other flagship phones.

Huawei is also expected to push the camera system further.

The biggest change is a rumored 200MP periscope telephoto camera. A sensor with this much resolution can give Huawei more room for digital crops while keeping more detail at longer zoom levels.

The rest of the camera system is less clear. Current leaks point to a triple-camera setup, with a telephoto lens across the Mate 90 range.

Huawei is also expected to use a new generation of its Red Maple color imaging system. This technology is designed to improve color capture and help the phone produce more natural results in different lighting.

The 200MP number sounds impressive, but the sensor alone will not decide image quality. The lens, stabilization and image processing will matter just as much.

The Mate 90 series is tipped to get batteries between 6,600mAh and 6,800mAh. The Pro Max could sit at the higher end of that range.

That would give Huawei plenty of room to balance the brighter display and more powerful processor. It should also help during long camera sessions, gaming and video playback.

The Mate 90 series is expected to launch in China later this month. Huawei has not yet confirmed the exact date or the full specifications.

For now, the Pro Max looks like a phone where Huawei is upgrading almost every major part. A new Kirin chip, a dual-layer OLED panel and a 200MP periscope camera could make the Mate 90 Pro Max one of the company's most ambitious flagships yet.
