The cost of DDR5 memory is going up, and
Framework has now made it clear
just how much. The firm, known for its modular laptop and PC gear, has shared a
fresh
price list for its DDR5 memory sticks. The update shows that buyers now
pay about $12 to $16 per GB.
That jump is not random. It links to the strong push in AI
tech and a wider rise in chip costs. The firm says it tries to post a new price
list once each month so users can track what is going on.
AI Rush
Drives Memory Costs Up
The AI wave has led to a high need for chips and memory. As
more firms build AI tools, the need for DDR5 keeps going up. When demand goes
up, price tends to rise too. That is what we see now.
Framework notes that 128 Gbit chips have seen the biggest
rise. Eight of these chips can make up a 128GB kit, and that size now costs far
more than before. In turn, this has pushed up the price for large memory kits.
The firm did try to keep some sizes close to past rates.
The 32GB and 64GB kits are priced as close to old rates as they can manage. But
even then, the wider trend in the chip trade has made it hard to hold prices
flat.
Clear
Pricing in a Tough Time
One key point from Framework is price trust. The firm says
it will sell memory based on the weighted mean cost it pays to its own supply
chain. In some cases, its price may even fall a bit below the market rate.
At the same time, the firm is open to buyers. It says users
should shop around. If a lower price can be found from a safe shop, buyers are
free to go that way. That kind of frank tone is rare in the tech trade.
A Hard
Phase for Tech Buyers
Framework says the tech world is still in a hard phase.
From chip gaps to cost hikes, firms and buyers both feel the strain. The only
step it can take now is to stay open on price and share clear data.
For now,
DDR5 memory will not get cheap soon. And with AI
still on the rise, the cost curve may keep its climb.
