OnePlus may be ready to fix a problem that many fans have had with its R-series phones. The upcoming OnePlus 16R could bring back a zoom camera, while also offering a fast chip and a huge battery. If the latest leak is right, this could be one of the most useful upgrades to the series in years.
Tipster Yogesh Brar has shared details of a test phone that has reached a late stage of development. OnePlus has not confirmed the phone or its specs yet, but the leak gives us a good idea of what to expect.
The zoom camera could be back
The OnePlus 16R is said to have three 50MP rear cameras. One of them could be a zoom camera, which would be a big change from the OnePlus 15R.
The older phone has a main camera and a wide-angle lens, but no zoom camera of its own. That means photos of faraway objects can lose detail when you zoom in. A real zoom lens could help the new phone take better shots from a distance and give portraits a more natural look.
We still don't know how far the new camera will zoom. Even so, I think this is the upgrade that matters most. OnePlus has done well with speed and battery life, but its R-series phones need better cameras to stand out.
A fast chip and a bigger battery
The leak also points to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This is a high-end chip that should handle games and heavy apps with ease. It could also give the 16R a clear speed boost over the OnePlus 15R.
The screen is said to support a 165Hz refresh rate, just like the current model. This makes motion look smooth when you scroll or play games that support high frame rates. Since the screen speed may stay the same, the camera and battery could be the bigger changes this time.
The battery could be even more impressive. The leak points to a size of more than 7,500mAh, up from 7,400mAh in the OnePlus 15R. That is not a huge jump, but it could still help the phone last longer between charges.
When will the OnePlus 16R launch?
OnePlus has not shared a launch date yet. Current reports point to a release in India in December 2026 or early 2027. The same hardware is also said to be under test at realme, though the final plans remain unclear.
For now, the return of the zoom camera is the best news. If OnePlus gets the camera right and keeps the strong battery life, the 16R could be a more complete phone than its predecessor. We will have to wait for the official launch to see if it delivers.
