POCO has launched another M8-series phone in India, and this one is all about battery life. The new POCO M8x 5G packs a huge 7,900mAh battery, a 6.9-inch 120Hz display and Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. Prices start at INR 20,999 (187 EU), although an early bank offer brings that down to INR 18,999.

That's a lot of battery for a phone that sits near the affordable end of POCO's lineup.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 makes its debut

The M8x is the first phone in India to use the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. The new 4nm chip is paired with up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. POCO claims more than 650,000 points in AnTuTu, which should be enough for normal apps and some light gaming.

I wouldn't buy this phone for raw speed, though. That's not really the point.
The big story is the 7,900mAh battery, which supports 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse charging. POCO says it can deliver up to 35 hours of social media use or 13 hours of GPS navigation on one charge. Those are company numbers, of course, but with a battery this large, I would still expect very good real-world results.

A big screen with one obvious catch

The POCO M8x has a 6.9-inch LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 7i. It also gets Wet Touch 2.0, so the screen should remain usable when your fingers are wet.

Here's the thing, though. Resolution is only 1600 x 720 pixels.
On a 6.9-inch panel, I would have preferred Full HD+. The lower resolution should help battery life, but you will lose some sharpness in return. This is probably the clearest sign of where POCO saved money.

50MP camera and six years of security updates

Around the back is a 50MP main camera with 2x digital zoom, joined by a 2MP macro sensor. An 8MP camera handles selfies. Again, nothing fancy here, but that's what I would expect at this price.
Software support is much more interesting. The phone ships with Android 16-based HyperOS 3, and POCO promises four Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates. That's a strong promise for an affordable M-series phone.
The POCO M8x costs INR 20,999 for 4GB/128GB and INR 22,999 for 6GB/128GB. Sales start on August 27, with Black, Blue and Leather Green colors available.
To be honest, I can forgive the 720p display at this price more easily than I expected. The M8x isn't trying to win a specs war. It gives you 5G, long software support and a battery that is almost twice the size of what we used to get in affordable phones.
