Fantasy Online 2 is a fun pixel
RPG with plenty of items, skills, and enemies to discover. Its relaxing gameplay is enjoyable at first, but repetitive combat and a lack of sound effects hold it back a lot in my opinion.
A great looking pixel RPG
One of the first things I liked about Fantasy Online 2 was its pixel art style. The
game has a charming look that suits its fantasy setting, and the relatively small download size of around 440 MB makes it easy to give it a try.
There is also a decent amount of content to explore. The map feels fairly large, there are plenty of different enemies to fight, and you can unlock a wide range of skills. The selection of items adds another reason to keep playing and see what else the game has to offer.
Overall, Fantasy Online 2 is easy to enjoy when you want something casual. It doesn't need to be an intense experience all the time, and its relaxed pace is one of its biggest strengths.
The tutorial could be much better
Getting started was not as easy as I would have liked. The tutorial doesn't explain things clearly enough, and I spent the first part of the game trying to work out what I was supposed to do.
Thankfully, it didn't take too long to get the hang of things. After around 15 minutes, I had a much better idea of how the game worked and could enjoy it without feeling lost.
Still, a better introduction would make those first minutes much less confusing, especially for new players who aren't familiar with this type of RPG.
Combat gets boring after a while
My biggest problem with Fantasy Online 2 is its combat. At first, fighting enemies is enjoyable enough, but it starts to feel repetitive as you play.
You need to stand still to cast certain spells, which means many fights follow the same pattern. You stop, use the same attack, and heal when necessary. There isn't enough variety to keep every encounter interesting over time.
The sound design doesn't help much either. I would have liked more sound effects to make battles feel more lively. The pixel art gives the game plenty of character, but the fights could use more audio feedback to match it.
Verdict: Worth a try, despite its flaws
Fantasy Online 2 has a lot going for it. Its pixel art looks nice, there are plenty of items and skills to unlock, and the large map gives you room to explore. It's also a fairly relaxing game, which makes it a good choice when you don't want anything too demanding.
However, the weak tutorial makes the beginning confusing, while repetitive combat eventually takes away some of the fun. More varied fights and better sound effects would make such a big difference. After all the OST's make the game.
I give Fantasy Online 2 a 7/10. It's a pleasant little
RPG with plenty to discover, but its combat needs more variety to keep me hooked for longer. I have a big soft spot for pixel art so i cant rate it any lower, but a soundtrack would really make it much better! I also should mention that its
still in early access so all of this might be changed and made better.
