Sege (XYZ-X1) $160, quad-core, 4.5-inch HD unboxing video

We take our first look at the Sege (XYZ-X1) $160, quad-core, 4.5-inch HD Android smartphone in this unboxing video.

For those of you looking to get the most bang for your buck, the SegeΒ (XYZ-X1) might well be the answer. We received our review unit just this morning and have uploaded the below unboxing video.

Sege (XYZ-X1)

The Sege (XYZ-X1)is manufactured for Menpoo by Shenzhen Saga Mobile in the South of China and like the JiaYu G4 features a quad-core MT6589 processor, 1GB RAM and 720p display.

Gizchina News of the week

There are obviously some differences between the Sege (XYZ-X1) and the flagship G4, the screen size is a little smaller on the (XYZ-X1)Β at 4.5-inch, the rear camera is an 8 mega-pixel unit, and most importantly the Sege (XYZ-X1)Β is around $120 less than the JiaYu!

Menpoo are offering the Sege (XYZ-X1) for $159.99 with free shipping in a number of colours including black, white, orange, red, pink and yellow.

We are currently testing the SegeΒ to see if it is actually worth spending your hard-earned cash on, but in the meantime take a look at our unboxing video below.

Andi, can you confirm which WCDMA the phone uses?

    Thank you.

    • June 10, 2013

      Official specs say: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHZ, WCDMA850/900/ 1900/2100MHZ

If these specs are true, then this is indeed a ‘one of a kind’ Chinese phone in terms of 3G (WCDMA) network support. Let’s hope for the best.

Doubt it. it’s an MTK processor.i’ve never seen an MTK phone use an external radio. mtk processors have embedded radios so when you’re buying an MTK phone you can look up the networks on MTK’s processor spec sheets.

where can you see that spec sheet ace?

It seems to me the Real low cost quad-core mobile phone that we are expecting since months…Like.. Cosmic X1 that is out of stock at fastcardtech, the Neo , that the real thing is that it will cost 50$ more.. soo.. For me.. i am thinking to get it, stay with it a few months and, in november take a tested MTK6589T with WDCDMA 900Mhz (i’m spanish and its hard to found chinese mobile with this network.), sooo what do you think? ..Therefore, the debate is an open one

Does this phone come with Play store installed (or can it be installed)?

    June 10, 2013

Would be interesting to know if MHL/OTG would be supported on this.

In fact, does the use of the chipset (MT6589 in this case) imply some functionality to be there, even if it may be missing from the menpoo site?

For example, the G4 supports OTG and MHL and is based on the same chipset.

Also related: Menpoo description states “Dual SIM Card Dual Standby”, while the MT6589 chipset should support “Dual-SIM and Dual-Active functionality” ( http://www.mediatek.com/_en/01_products/04_pro.php?sn=1081 ). Any idea whether this functionality is available with *any* phone, as long as it uses the chipset and has dual sim slots?

    • Jan Bouvrie
      June 10, 2013

If so, I might add, then the JiaYu G4 would also sport Dual *Active* Sim, instead of ‘just’ Dual Standby. πŸ˜‰

An Antutu benchmark would be nice

    June 10, 2013

I think it’s the same design as the Cubot GT99, which if you checkout final prices, is $ 2 cheaper. Nice Antutu scores – i’m curious about your review Andy.

      June 10, 2013

Yep, looks exactly the same at Cubot GT99 in all but it’s Camera (Cubot GT99 is 5MP front and 12MP back) yet The Cubot only supports 2100mhz WCDMA. Also the Cubot supports A-GPS and EPO assistance “to speed up positioning”

Take a look at this video. Was thinking of buying the Cubot GT99 but the screen looks like it has some sort of interference when playing games and watching videos, and looks washed out when Browsing / googleplay. I can’t make out if this is the video clip or a problem with the screen… How did you find the screen of the Sege Andi? I guess it’s likely to be the same screen looking at specs.

the interference you have seen is becouse they didn’t decode the video very well
there is another video on youtube on which everything is like it should

i am very interested about this phone
i hope it is not the same like XYZ becouse i don’t like to buy a phone with 1800mah

this one uses the same design but i think it is from Cubot
the phone is very new so there are still no reviews for it
i am waiting for a review and if it is good i will be definitelly buying the phone
specs are great and it is very cheap

let me know if someone gets this phone and share your opinion

I’ve bought the Cubot from PandaWill. Won’t receive it for a few weeks. Once I get it, i’ll try and do a little review

i am counting on you πŸ™‚
i am not buying it before review
i mainly want to know if the calls are great with the microphone becouse i had bad experience with the Star b94m
oh and dont forget if only 2100mah is only for 3g
i see some list the 850mhz too

            thanks

I’d be interested to know much (if any) import taxes you’re charged to get this phone into the UK! Also I’m unsure about it being WCDMA… I gather this works in the UK but is not as fast as HSDPA+ and only has a limit of 2Mbps? It does seem a great value phone but I hope the build quality is at least ok (it doesn’t have Gorilla Glass though doors it?)!

      • AK
        June 12, 2013

HSPDA+ speeds can be sent and received over WCDMA bands which are used in the UK, mainly on the 2100Mhz frequency. If the phones CPU supports these HSPDA+ data speeds then you’re laughing. The Sege has the Mediatek MTK6589 under its hood which luckily does support these data speeds, its always worth double checking with the supplier though. However you do want to watch out for Chinese MTK6589 phones that use the TD-SCDMA band instead of WCDMA such as the No.1 S5; not only will you not be able to get HSPDA+ speeds, you won’t be able to use the phone outside of China. TD-SCDMA was developed in china to prevent reliance on the expensive western developed WCDMA band, it runs at a meagre 2mbps max.

To check which 3G bands / frequencies your service provider use, http://maps.mobileworldlive.com have a handy search tool. Hope this helps

DO NOT order from these guys.
I ordered the day andi posted the story. Paid via PayPal. Immediately took my money and then sent me ‘we will contact you with a shipping’ email.
    Have heard nothing since.
The phone was listed as in stock, I paid for express 3-5 day shipping.
    No sign of phone.
    No email.

Have emailed them asking for update … Nothing heard back.
Have emailed them cancelling the order….. Still nothing.

So… Until they bother to correspond with me…. I repeat.

    DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE.

And… Just to top it all. The website is now dead.
Me thinks I have been ripped off and am now down on cash and down on a phone πŸ™
Not happy because I have just spent 6 months out of work and can I’ll afford to loose my money.

Andi…. You still got the demo unit? You wouldn’t want to donate to a now poor reader would you πŸ™‚

    • June 13, 2013

Hi Rob. I do have the phone but I have to return it to them. The marketing person was “chatting” (read annoying me) on QQ yesterday so I asked them about the Menpoo name and if they realised how stupid it sounds, they said customers had said the same and they were moving the site to dygaga.com….. However neither site is working for me this morning.

        Cheers andi.
If you manage to ‘chat’ to them again perhaps you could mention order number 100000653 and get them to cancel and refund.
Many thanks and keep up the good work.
        Rob.
