Xiaomi’s Hongmi 2, Redrice 2, has cropped up in a number of confusing leaks and rumours over the past few days, but the latest news seems a dead cert (maybe).

Looking around the web the past few days it is hard not to meet a Xiaomi hongmi 2 rumour. We have heard that the phone is in production, that it could have 4G LTE and now that it will have a turbo charged 8-core processor!

The latest reports/rumours/fact? now suggest that the Xiaomi hongmi 2 will have a new variant on the octacore MT6592 processor from Mediatek. This new chip will be a 2.3Ghz MT6592 processor, something we haven’t yet seen! What’s more the phone will have 2GB RAM, a 5.5-inch 720p display and 8 mega-pixel main camera.

If these latest rumours are true it would suggest that the Hongmi 2 won’t have 4G LTE, as the MT6592(T) does not have LTE support, however it does have TD-SCDMA/WCDMA and GSM.

Oddly for Xiaomi it is rumoured the price will be increases slightly for this version of the Hongmi 2 from 799 Yuan to 999 Yuan, thus leaving room for another Red Rice phone to fill this gap.

With all these rumours it is hard to know what is going on at Xiaomi, but one thing is for sure the image above (and published around the web on various sites) is NOT the 5.5-inch Xiaomi Hongmi 2, but in fact the WCDMA version of the Hongmi 1S with Qualcomm processor.

Wrong direction. If I made the decisions at Xiaomi , I would concentrate efforts on brand recognition in 3rd world countries.
I would produce the original Hongmi1 with 6582 instead of 6589.
Would sell worldwide for 100-120$ and make a killing with selling tens if millions. In 5-10 years those people from Africa and S.america would stay loyal to the brand quality and later buy the more expensive model.
Taking place of Nokia/Samsung. Not fight uphill battle against iPhone.
