umi zero

Umi have been enjoying a runaway success with their UMi Zero smartphone, and its great to see they are supporting their fans with software updates.

Um Zero update 3.0.3 is available to download via the UMidigi forums now (unfortunately not available as an OTA yet). The update needs to be downloaded and copied to an SD card, but the process is fairly straight forward:

Gizchina News of the week

  1. Copy the file to an SD card.
  2. Ensure you have at least 50% of power in the phone.
  3. Head in to settings > About the phone > System updates > Start update
  4. Wait a few moments and wait for the UMi Zero to reboot a few times
  5. Done

The updates brings a few fixes and optimizations to the UMi Zero including enhanced battery performance, new quick toggles, camera optimizations and the addition of notification lights.

For the full details of the UMi Zero rom update and to download the ROM head over to the UMidigi forums.

I just wish they’d make the touch screen more sensitive…

In comparison to my OPO and my better halfs ZP999 the sensitivity is very poor!

And for some reason they’ve removed the Air Gesture menu item in settings (not that anyone ever uses them…) But what would be really nice in the next update Umi! Is tap/knock gestures…

Touch sensitivity can be changed, it’s a software issue.I am not sure if Oppo uses Gloves touch technology like this one

-Air Gesture removed because we are not able to fulfilled the feature, we might add it back once we have solve the problem
-Touch screen sometime is not sensitive when you put the phone table/desk other stuff that interference by static. when holding on hand you do not have this problem.
-we will take your advice in terms of tap/knock gestures for the next few updates.

Wow an actual Umi person here 🙂 That’s fantastic!

Yes, the touch screen tends to be poor in the in car holder mounted to the Window, if you could do something with the Sensitivity in the future that would be really really great!

As for the gestures, theres only 3 that are really necessary in my opinion…
        – Double Tap to Wake
        – Draw ‘SOMETHING’ to Activate/Deactivate the Flashlight/Torch
        – Draw ‘SOMETHING’ to Activate the Camera.

Also, something really small that would be great is on the Pin Unlock screen, could you make it so it logs in once you’ve put the correct Pin code in WITHOUT having to press the ‘Ok’ button..? (My OnePlus One does this, it’s a great little thing that you soon miss once you don’t have it…) (Basically, the OK Button is unnecessary in my opinion…)

        Otherwise, lovely phone! 🙂

Thank you for the advises=) We will try to fix it in our new updates =)

My biggest regret was bought Umi Zero. don’t ever expect to get good stuff at low prices. My phone restart everytime all of day, touch screen isn’t sensitive. My phone MAC address always changing if i turn off the phone or restart the phone or just only turn off the wifi. Update isn’t solve the problems. I don’t recommend umi zero if you there interest to buy it. DON’T!!!
And one more, my phone is very easy to heat like microwave. If you wana be cooking, I recommend you buy this phone. 😀

    • January 11, 2015

Thanks for the insight. Was thinking of getting it based on its cool appearance. I guess I should get a Vivo

Yeah…. You just buy from other manufactures.

        • January 14, 2015

I wish I could have them all. LoL. Including this.

If someone could invent an easy way to just jump from one phone to another so I can take a larger phone if I am out and about or a thin, cool phone if going clubbing or a front-speaker phone if watching movie. Oh well…. (DO NOT mention the fruit company… the white one! ps I dont think their solution is flawless either).

You look like a newbie, don’t get choked as the issues you’ve mentioned are related to software not the structure nor the bad build quality. And still if you don’t agree then I suggest you go for the brands.(You need to find solution with the help of Google for your mobile concerns someway like you by your own browsed and bought this mobile online)

Yeah, I bought UMI Zero yeaterday. Just packed it again. The flaws must be removed by providing along with updates and the device would become wonderful.
        1. MAC address changing problem.
        2. Heating problem

    January 11, 2015

I have to say something fair that my UMI ZERO is working perfectly fine. I really don’t have the problem you mentioned. The heat is fairly acceptable. however the main issue cause the heat is not UMI ZERO but the processor MEK6592T.

      January 12, 2015

Good, the main cause for heat is its slimmer body and as said by you, the Turbo processor.( It’s a common thing for such chipsets)

Zalzala, read umidigi forum – there’s a lot of info and complaints about zero issues…it had to be my next phone, but now my plans changed.

      January 12, 2015

yeah, was going to purchase when it was $199 (they also ship to my country), until I read the heat issue complaints. I have bad experience with heat issue on my Nexus 4 and Redmi 1S, it make the phone throttle a lot making it unusable.

If they would add 4G, you would lose 1GB RAM, aluminum construction and AMOLED screen.

Hi Peter , where did you find the 3.03 upload or did you just figure out how to do the one here? ( I’m no techie) Really impressed with my phone, I really don’t know what some people expect. Just got the neat flip case for it. Not sure if it turns the phone on but my on / off button seems to work on a hair trigger do you know of any settings hidden away for this perchance? Cheers Callum

Hi , really liking my phone . Just got a flip case for it, The on / off switch gets activated really easily I think a slide switch might have been a bit better . Phone off…stays off, phone on… stays on . Simple?

Just received the phone. Really good and well build. Only one show stopper in using the Umi Zero. The WIFI connection get disconnected or the speed drops to 2 Mbps every 1 to 5 minutes. This is stopping me from using the Umi Zero. Is there perhaps somebody who can help in solving the issue?

    • Mull
      January 18, 2015

I think I get the same thing. It throws out the voucher system code I need for wifi at work. If you hear any solutions I’d be interested to hear them. Cheers Mull

Hey I just received UMI zero yesterday, but it does not meets up the criteria as promised. GUI not so appealing, theme cannot be changed etc. etc.

but the main issue is it keeps changing its Wifi MAC address after each reboot. Since my network is MAC bind, I’m unable to use it. Seems I’ve wasted my money.

They have already provided me with updated version 3.05. So no other issues with rebooting. Is there any other update which can fix other issues.

I bought this UMI Zero couple of months ago and setup a privacy password. Later when I bought a windows phone, I reset the UMI Zero. I gave the phone to my son and unfortunately I forgot the privacy password and am not able to get into the phone. Need UMI to help me here. Thanks
