Elephone are reaching out to Android ROM developers in the search for someone to bring the latest version of Lollipop to their phones.

For the past year Elephone have been fast to adopt new ROM’s and in recent weeks have even released alternate systems for a few popular models. In keeping with their commitment to bring the latest Android versions to their phones, Elephone have posted an official thread on their forum asking for developers to bring Android 5.1 Lollipop to their devices.

Gizchina News of the week

In the thread Elephone point out the difficulties in bring the latest version of Lollipop to Mediatek devices as the source code hasn’t been made public, but are willing to hear from developers who think they are up to the challenge to develop for them.

Android developers wanting to try their hand should head over to the Elephone forums and get in touch.

what can people do without sources? if a new kernel is required for the update, there is not much it can be done!

It’s a great initiative of course. But, everyone knows… the problem of lack of development for MTK devices is Mediatek, and nothing more. We even can see some truly Warriors Developers, who make possible the MTK6589 runs Kitkat and even Lollipop (died in 4.2.1), and the old, but not bad MTK6577 runs 4.4 (died in 4.1.1 ~4.1.2). If Elephone wants something REAL, just put high pressure on MTK, if every brand made that, MTK will not have choice. But no, MTK device is cheap, so if you want a update just buy another in the next year. That could sounds like truth on past, but now, the processors are really awesome… of course many things has changed, MTK6582 and 92 started on Jelly Bean, but most of “serious” devices got update to 4.4.2 and now they only come on 4.4.2. On the past you can’t expect that. Mediatek please do one more thing… Release the sources, and your processor will really make sucess.

Up til a while ago Mediatek was very closed to mobile developers. But slow changes are seen and MediaTek is even involved in XDA: Devcon in 2014. They also gave the Source Code free in some Android One projects.

I don’t think things will go fast in 2015 concerning this but more and more will become Open Source I think. And hope.
