Design
The design is one of the strongest points of UMIDIGI Z2 and Xiaomi 8. UMIDIGI Z2 is one of the most beautiful handsets in the midrange sector with a four-sides curved glass back and a shining aluminum frame. The same with the Xiaomi 8 except the cheaper not shining frame on Mi 8. Both smartphone adopt now-popular notch cutout with almost the same size, we can see the picture below, both smartphone almost has the same high screen-to-body ratio.
However, the UMIDIGI Z2 applied reflective back with popular gradient color, which on Mi8 series you can’t see it. The UMIDIGI Z2 now is available in three gradient color: Twilight, Twilight Black and Phantom. Especially when we talking about the Twilight color, the Twilight variant came to be was inspired by none other than the Northen Lights. And engineers UMIDIGI managed to achieve this harmonious look on the flagship was probably not an easy task. They have to go through countless body prototypes for the best results so in the end, they settled on a non-conductive vacuum metalizing (NCVM) coating for displaying the best aurora effect. And there we can see the cool design of Twilight variant, and the same with Twilight Black and phantom version, we made a bunch of prototypes to achieve the best color effect for our products.
So considering all of this, the UMIDIGI Z2 is definitely a big winner.

Display
The UMIDIGI Z2 and Xiaomi 8 have the same size notch. Both feature a Full HD+ resolution, both smartphone is lightweight and almost own the same size of body.The UMIDIGI Z2 applied IPS LCD screen while the Mi8 adopts an AMOLED screen. So the only difference is the material screen. Actually, in mobile industries, we consider the AMOLED screen is better than the LCD screen. So according to this at this moment the Xiaomi 8 wins.
Camera
We do not have enough data to establish which will be the best camera. These phones have a dual camera setup on their rear side. However, the UMIDIGI Z2 owns 16+8MP, F2.0 dual rear camera from Samsung sensor while the Mi8 comes from with rear camera 12MP+12MP, F1.8+F2.4. So for the rear camera is difficult to conclude which one is better. However, the UMIDIGI Z2 has better front cameras than Xiaomi 8. Z2 applied dual camera 16+8MP setup while Xiaomi 8 only features a 20MP front camera.
Hardware/Software
We are not going to argue that Xiaomi 8 has a better power performance than UMIDIGI Z2. The UMIDIGI Z2 equipped octa-core Helio P23 Soc while the xiaomi 8 applied the Snapdragon 845. So on the performance’s side, the Xiaomi8 is definitely much more powerful than the UMIDIGI Z2. On the software side, the UMIDIGI Z2 comes with stock android 8.1, and Russia LineageOS group declared to provide unofficial ROM for this device. As for Xiaomi 8, Mi8 works on company’s MIUI 9.5 which was based on Android 8.1. So once again it is difficult to say which one is a winner in the software side. Because someone more like the stock system without pre-installed apps, but someone more like the MIUI system.
Battery
UMIDIGI Z2 has a bigger battery with a capacity of 3850 mAh compared with Mi8’s 3400 mAh. But we have to see how well it has been optimized to know if its battery life will really be longer than the Xiaomi 8. Considering that UMIDIGI Z2 has 3850 mAh, there is a good chance that it will provide a longer battery life than its opponent. But we want to verify it before expressing a final judgment. And about the charging time, the UMIDIGI Z2 with 18W fast charging can be fully charged within 80 minutes while Mi8 need 100 minutes to be fully charged. From now on, UMIDIGI Z2 wins.
Price
Price for UMIDIGI Z2 is very competitive. The UMIDIGI Z2 starts its presale now from $249.99 with $50 off at Gearbest. While Mi8 costs $550 in its configuration with 6GB of RAM and 64GB ROM. So in the price structure, the UMIDIGI Z2 definitely is a winner.
