The Netherlands is now having its first feel of 5G network, thanks to telecom provider, T-Mobile. According to reports, T-Mobile is using the Oppo Reno 5G for its testing. This smartphone arrived in the Netherlands about three months ago. It also prides as the first 5G smartphone in Europe. T-Mobile and Oppo have an agreement for the former to market the latter’s smartphones in the Netherlands. Furthermore, T-Mobile wants to become the first Dutch provider with a nationwide 5G network.

T-Mobile’s 5G Field Lab testing has been done at its head office in The Hague. There, the company successfully established a 5G connection with the Oppo Reno 5G. Its test download speeds are up to 850 Mbps while the upload speed exceeds 50 Mbps. This is quite low because many 5G test download speeds are in excess of 1 Gbps. For comparison, its 4G maximum download speed is about 400 Mbps. The regular 4G network download speeds are around 85 Mbps while the upload speeds are about 32 Mpbs.  T-Mobile will be the first provider to roll out 5G in the Netherlands probably next year. The Hague should become the first Dutch city to switch completely to 5G.

Harrison Chen, CEO Oppo Netherlands: We are grateful to be able to take this important step with T-Mobile, and we are proud of the successful result of this first 5G test in the Netherlands. The Oppo Reno 5G has been developed to take connectivity to a new level and we look forward to further shaping the developments regarding the 5G era in the Netherlands together with our partners.

At the moment, testing 5G applications is only possible at a number of 5G research locations. The tests give a taste of what will be possible after the national rollout of 5G in 2020. In addition, the first 5G frequency (700MHz) will be available early next year. The auction of the 3500MHz frequency should follow in 2022/2023.

Kim Larsen, CTIO T-Mobile Netherlands: We are proud that we were the first to establish a 5G connection on a live network on an Oppo smartphone. T-Mobile is always looking for the latest, fastest and most innovative devices for its customers. Oppo is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world and one of the leaders in the field of 5G. By experimenting with different functionalities of the 5G technology in our 5G Field Lab, the consumer can already taste the 5G possibilities of the future.

According to a Canalys report, there will be more 5G smartphones in the global phone market than 4G devices. The rollout will be fastest in China and America, partly because of government support.
