The development of 5G is rapidly spreading and both chipmakers and OEMs are doing all they can to get the “first bite” of the market. According to Taiwanese media, MediaTek plans to ship 60 million 5G chips shipments next year. MediaTek already has the MT6885 7nm 5G SoC whose current status is “ultra-quick order production”. This chip should go into mass production before the end of this year.
The likes of Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei will probably use the MediaTek 5G chip for some of their budget 5G device. According to reports, early evaluation of MediaTek’s 5G chip claims that it should cost around $50. This is over a 400% increase of the $12 which its 4G chip cost. MediaTek is extremely optimistic about the Chinese 5G market. Market consulting firm Strategy Analytic believes that by 2020, about 80 million 5G phones will be available in China. Worldwide, the agency believes that there will be over 160 million 5G phones.
MediaTek CEO, Cai Lixing, believes that global sales of 5G phones will reach 140 million units. According to him, China also will account for 100 million units. The company believes that it has an advantage in the 5G market. According to MediaTek, its chances in the 5G market is much better than its 4G performance.
