iPhone XR dominated the ranking of the best-selling smartphones of 2019

Omdia’s latest report outlines a disturbing scenario for iPhone’s direct rivals. 2019 is now on file, but it’s still time to take stock, to understand who really won the challenge in the world of smartphones. According to data published by Omdia, Apple occupies the first two places of the podium with the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.

The king of the Top 10 according to Omdia is the iPhone XR with 46.3 million units shipped in 2019 in addition to 23.1 million in 2018. This makes it one of the best-selling smartphones ever. The second place of the podium is occupied by the new iPhone 11, the spiritual successor of the iPhone XR and capable of reaching the 37.3 million units shipped in just 3 months of life. It couldn’t have gone better than that.

In third place, we finally find Samsung, although its best-seller device for 2019 ( 30.3 million units ) is precisely the cheapest of its lineup, the Galaxy A10. The other models that are able to enter the Top 10 are all of the medium-low range (Galaxy A50 , A20, J2 Core and Redmi Note 7), while Apple also manages to place iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 8. This means that the biggest revenues are all for the Cupertino company, while rivals have to settle for crumbs.

“Apple has consistently owned the first and second positions in the global smartphone model shipment ranking, with the company maintaining this dominant position for more than five years running,” said Jusy Hong, smartphone research and analysis director at Omdia. “The company’s continue dominance on this front is all the more remarkable when considering that Apple’s price hikes because the overall iPhone shipments to decline last year. By limiting the number of models it offers compared to its top competitors, Apple has been able to concentrate its sales on a few smartphones that have broad appeal, like the iPhone XR.”
