Many smartphones in the industry now have a multi-camera system with a wider range of use scenarios through different lens combinations. The result of these combinations is a stronger imaging effect. The periscope lens is now a simple technology, however, it is now a standard for Android flagships.
However, Apple is yet to consider this technology. Nevertheless, there are reports that the company is not trying to make progress, but is exploring a more mature solution. According to reports, Apple will use the periscope lens in 2021. Considering that the company is working on a “more mature solution”, we expect Apple’s solution to introduce something new. As of now, there are no details of the improvements that the company will introduce.
According to popular Apple analyst, Kuo Ming-Chi, the company will use the periscope lens next year. However, due to Samsung’s patent issues in this technology hindering Apple’s plan, it needs to bypass some of Samsung’s patents or pay the authorization fee.
It is worth mentioning that some time ago, Apple obtained a related patent authorization for a periscope lens. The patent is named “Folded Camera” (foldable camera) and it has been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This patent shows that the technology can integrate a camera module composed of multiple lenses into a mobile device. The goal is to improve the imaging effect of the camera.
The camera module contains two prism-like light folding elements and an independent lens system located between the two light folding elements. The lens system can move independently to provide autofocus and optical image stabilization.
In addition, the shape, material, and arrangement of the refractive lens elements in the lens group can be selected, while providing a long enough back focal length to adapt to the second prism. This will enable it to bring high-resolution and high-quality images.
According to reports, this technology may bring 10 – 100x zoom capability to the iPhone. Also, there are claims that its long-distance shooting will compete head-on with Android. We will have to wait a while before we eventually get this technology.
