The Chinese company Xiaomi and its Redmi brand, according to network sources, are preparing new mid-range smartphones with 5G support. We are talking about devices equipped with a Snapdragon 870 processor.
Xiaomi and Redmi will release smartphones with the Snapdragon 870 SoC
The named chip combines eight Kryo 585 cores with a clock speed of up to 3.2 GHz, an Adreno 650 graphics accelerator and a Snapdragon X55 5G cellular modem.
It is known that the Xiaomi smartphone based on the Snapdragon 870 platform will receive a 6.7-inch OLED display with curved edges. The refresh rate of this panel will be 120 Hz. Power will be provided by a 5,000mAh rechargeable battery with support for 67W wired charging and 33W wireless charging.
The device will have a front-facing camera with a 20-megapixel sensor. The multi-module rear camera can include a main sensor with 108 or 50 mega pixels. The Harmon Kardon audio system is also mentioned.
As for the upcoming Redmi smartphone, it is credited with having a 6.6-inch Samsung OLED screen. The equipment will also include JBL stereo speakers and a 5000 mAh battery. The official announcement of both new products may take place in the near future.
Apple becomes the second-largest smartphone maker, overtaking Xiaomi
Apple is once again the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. The Cupertino-based company shipped 50.4 million smartphones in the third quarter, according to IDC. This is 6.1 million more than Xiaomi, which previously ranked second. The first place is still belong to Samsung, which shipped 18.6 million more smartphones than Apple in the third quarter of the year.
The latest data shows iPhone shipments are up 20.8% year over year. This figure makes Apple the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturer out of the top five. For example, Samsung shipments fell 14.2% and Xiaomi dropped 4.6% year on year. The loss of positions of Samsung and Xiaomi can be attributed to the global shortage of semiconductors, which has affected all key industries. In the global market, smartphone sales fell 6.7% from last year.
However, the crisis also affected Apple. At the moment, the delivery time for iPhone 13 smartphones has grown significantly. Consumers who order the device now will receive it only at the end of November, or even in December. This slows down iPhone sales and prevents Apple from surpassing Samsung as the number one smartphone manufacturer. However, such a scenario is possible if Apple can secure large stocks of chips next year. According to forecasts of industry experts, the semiconductor shortage could last until the end of next year.
It is worth noting that at the moment a hot battle in the smartphone market is between Vivo and Oppo. Both Chinese companies shipped about 33.3 million smartphones in the third quarter, thus tied for fourth place. Vivo posted 5.8% growth and Oppo shipments grew 8.6% year over year. The total number of smartphones shipped in 2021 is currently 331.2 million.
