Apple becomes the second-largest smartphone maker, overtaking Xiaomi

Apple is once again the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. The Cupertino-based company shipped 50.4 million smartphones in the third quarter, according to IDC. This is 6.1 million more than Xiaomi, which previously ranked second. The first place is still belong to Samsung, which shipped 18.6 million more smartphones than Apple in the third quarter of the year.

The latest data shows iPhone shipments are up 20.8% year over year. This figure makes Apple the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturer out of the top five. For example, Samsung shipments fell 14.2% and Xiaomi dropped 4.6% year on year. The loss of positions of Samsung and Xiaomi can be attributed to the global shortage of semiconductors, which has affected all key industries. In the global market, smartphone sales fell 6.7% from last year.

However, the crisis also affected Apple. At the moment, the delivery time for iPhone 13 smartphones has grown significantly. Consumers who order the device now will receive it only at the end of November, or even in December. This slows down iPhone sales and prevents Apple from surpassing Samsung as the number one smartphone manufacturer. However, such a scenario is possible if Apple can secure large stocks of chips next year. According to forecasts of industry experts, the semiconductor shortage could last until the end of next year.

It is worth noting that at the moment a hot battle in the smartphone market is between Vivo and Oppo. Both Chinese companies shipped about 33.3 million smartphones in the third quarter, thus tied for fourth place. Vivo posted 5.8% growth and Oppo shipments grew 8.6% year over year. The total number of smartphones shipped in 2021 is currently 331.2 million.
