While a lot of brands are comfortable with the benefits of OLED displays, Apple wants to go beyond. After years of sticking with the so-called Retina Displays, which in the end were based on LCD, the company made the switch to OLED on iPhones. The company is gradually changing the display tech of its devices to OLED, but the future already points toward a new direction. Apple plans to switch to micro-LED display tech, and that move will begin in the next year.

The move to micro-LED is on Apple’s cards

To those unaware, MicroLED is a promising display technology that can be an alternative to OLED. Don’t confuse this with the current mini-LED tech which is available in some devices, and stands as an evolution of LCD. The micro-LED display tech will offer deep blacks with great contrast. Moreover, it will provide power efficiency and higher brightness output. The biggest benefit of OLED is that the pixels won’t degrade over time. The pixel issues and burn-in are some of the biggest issues in current OLED panels. Right now, we can find micro-LED tech in some Samsung and LG TVs, but Apple wants to bring the tech to its products.

As usual, the company will play a safe game with the introduction of micro-LED. It plans to add the technology to the Apple Watch series, after that, it’s natural to expect the new tech on iPhones and other Apple products like MacBooks and iPads. The company will not manufacture these displays. Instead, it will rely on Samsung and LG. However, the technology will still be based on Apple’s specifications and demands.

Bloomberg states that the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra is the candidate to debut a micro-LED display. A similar report emerged in the past week, pointing to the same fact. However, Bloomberg also states that a delay to 2025 is not discarded. That said, we probably won’t see the new technology reaching the iPhones before 2025 or 2026. Considering the current arrangement, it will reach the iPhone Pro lineup.

Interestingly, we may see the micro-LED tech reaching an Apple device before 2024. Some rumors also point to the Apple Mixed Reality headset as the first device with the technology.
