Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in November of last year. After moving to TSMC’s 4nm tech, users were amazed by the device’s performance and energy usage. The Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is now the subject of rumours as well. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 flagship chip did show up on GeekBench about a month ago. The listing, however, did not say much about the chip design. While we expect another more detailed listing, new reports claim that the frequency of the chip will increase from 3.5GHz to a maximum of 3.72GHz. In terms of architecture, there have been two separate reports. One report claims that this flagship SoC will have a “1+5+2” design. However, there is another report that claims that this processor will have a “1+4+3” architecture.
Snapdragon 8 Gen3 design
Well, the whole thing just got more complex. There is a third report regarding the architecture of this chip and it is weird. The internal model of the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is SM8650, code-named Lanai. A new report reveals that the CPU architecture is incredibly cutting-edge. It claims that the chip will use a “1+2+3+2” 8-core design, as pointed out by leakster Kuba Wojciechowski.
Among them, one super-large core is based on the Cortex-Xn (where n is a number) of the ARM processor known as the Hunter ELP. Two large cores are based on the A7xx of the same CPU while three medium cores are based on the A7xx of the same CPU. The two small cores are based on the Hayes A5xx of the same SoC.
The Hunter ELP is the successor of Cortex-X3 or Cortex-X4 while Hunter is the successor of Cortex-A715. Also, Hayes is the successor of Cortex-A510R1. We will have more info about these chips at the ARM summit in a few months.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 GeekBench scores
Just over a month ago, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 made its first public appearance on GeekBench. The single-core running score and a multi-core score of the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 are 1930 and 6236, respectively. It is a vast improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor’s single-core 1524 and multi-core 4597. According to this score, when this chip finally shows up, it will become the new king of the hill. The new Apple A16 Bionic SoC gets multi-core scores of 5447 and single-core scores of 1877 on GeekBench. With a single-core GeekBench score of 1524 and a multi-core score of 4597, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performs admirably. In other words, the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 finally wins over the Apple A16.
Yet, for a few reasons, the Android side shouldn’t celebrate too soon. The chip’s performance could alter either up or down because this is just a model for engineering purposes. Before this chip is formally launched, though, it will be some time. Because of this, its rivals have time to enhance their chips. After learning about TSMC’s superior manufacturing capabilities, it seems unlikely that Qualcomm will soon switch back to Samsung. Also, reports claim that Apple’s A17, a next-generation CPU, will monopolize the TSMC 3nm tech. The Snapdragon 8 Gen3 would still be produced using TSMC’s 4nm tech, though.
With advances in performance, battery efficiency, and new features like support for 5G connectivity and 8K video capture, the Snapdragon flagship CPUs have seen major growth over the years. There are undoubtedly not many companies that can compete with Qualcomm, particularly in the flagship market. Only MediaTek seems to be making a strong effort. Even so, Qualcomm still outperforms the Taiwanese chipmaker in the flagship market.
