Flip It, Map It, Love It: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 Takes Google Maps to the Next Level

Galaxy Z Flip5

We still have one month ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked event. On July 26th, Samsung plans to unveil a range of new products. Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 will be the stars of the show. If the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 aims to impress with a new hinge design with almost no crease, the Galaxy Z Flip5 highlight No kidding, we are up for a significant upgrade! The lineup will leave the tiny 1.9-inch display to a 3.4-inch panel on the Galaxy Z Flip5. As per a new report, it seems that the display will further improve the way users interact with this foldable phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 will run apps like Google Maps straight from the Cover Display

Until the Galaxy Z Flip4, not much could be done with the cover display. However, that is set to change with the Galaxy Z Flip5. The new 3.4-inch panel will bring a 748 x 720 resolution and will allow Samsung to run apps from the cover display. It will no longer be a mere viewfinder for notifications, photos, or widgets. The brand has allegedly been working with Google to add support for apps like Google Maps.

Gizchina News of the week

It’s unclear how much of Google Maps will be usable via the Galaxy Z Flip5 cover display. In any case, we suspect that you will be able to put a route and see the navigation details through the cover screen. The recently-released Moto Razr 40 Ultra brings a full-fledged version of the app. We’re not sure whether this is the case for the Z Flip5. There are some issues that need to be ironed out first. For instance, even the Razr phone had issues with the Maps UI that didn’t go around the camera punch roles. This should be an issue for the Z Flip5 unless Samsung managed to fix that.

While the report mentions Google Maps, we are sure that other Google Apps should also be usable through the cover display. There are some apps that make sense like YouTube, and perhaps Gmail. Besides Google Apps, Samsung will ensure compatibility with its One UI apps to run straight from the cover display. We don’t expect the panel to be advanced like the one on the Galaxy Z Fold5. However, it already is an upgrade in the right direction. Perhaps, in the future, the brand will manage to put a display on the entire cover of the Z Flip series.

Apart from the display, most of the Galaxy Z Flip5 upgrades will be internal. We expect more details to keep leaking as the launch date draws near.
