Apple has been slow to adopt OLED technology. Some iPhone and Apple Watch products have it, but not iPad and MacBook. However, according to a new report by research firm Omdia, the iPad might be the first to get OLED.

The report claims that Apple is on track to bring OLED to its 2024 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models. Production will begin in the first quarter of next year. Apple plans to use low-temperature multi-crystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels, which are top-of-the-line. It makes sense for the Pro line to have the best display technology. Apple already uses Mini LED LCD panels for iPad Pro, which are excellent, but OLED offers even more benefits.

Compared to Mini LED, OLED provides perfect blacks, per-pixel light control, excellent contrast, and HDR. It is also more power-efficient, and Apple may push for higher brightness levels. The LTPO technology allows for dynamic display refresh rate adjustment, saving even more power.

However, the report also brings bad news. MacBook models won’t have OLED panels by the end of 2024 as previously rumored. They are said to be delayed and expected to arrive in 2027.

Apple has always been meticulous in the quality of its displays. Although slow to adopt OLED, it seems that the iPad will finally join the OLED club. The benefits of OLED technology, such as perfect blacks and power efficiency, will enhance the iPad Pro experience. MacBook users, however, will have to wait a few more years for OLED displays to become a reality. Nevertheless, Apple’s commitment to display quality remains strong, and they continue to explore new technologies to deliver the best visual experience to their customers.
