Qualcomm introduces AR/VR platforms Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1


Qualcomm has just announced its next-generation AR/VR platforms. With the imminent rise of AR/VR platforms, corroborated by the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro, Qualcomm wants to offer manufacturers a powerful complete platform for development of similar solutions. The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR Gen 1 come to enable mixed reality and virtual reality. One of Qualcomm’s focus with the new generation is to enable manufacturers to produce thin and lightweight devices that won’t require a massive battery pack. With the new platforms, OEMs will have a good chance to try in this field that will soon get more popular with the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro.

Snapdragon XR2 Gen2

The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR Gen 2 is the more interesting chip of the duo. It offers support for MR (Mixed Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) devices with 2.5x better GPU performance compared to its predecessor. It also has 8x better AI performance to handle tasks, and offers support for up to 10 cameras and sensors. It also offers support for 2x 3K displays, and has the latest Spectra ISP on board.

Snapdragon XR2 Gen2

The Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform aims at lightweight smart glasses for mixed reality. Moreover, it enables recording and live-streaming directly from the glasses, performance of visual searches and real-life translation.

Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform Will Launch Meta Quest 3

Interestingly enough, both platforms are developed in collaboration with Meta. They will debut with new Meta devices soon. The upcoming Meta Quest 3, for example, will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform. Meanwhile, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart glasses will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 platform. Other OEMs will also be able to developed their own devices with this platform by 2024.
