Google Renames Google Camera: Say Hello to Pixel Camera

Google Pixel Camera

The Google Camera app that has been exclusive to Pixel devices has just been renamed by Google. If you’re a Pixel owner and head to your app library, you will see Pixel Camera instead. Google has also changed the description of the app in the Google Play Store.

Now, the rebranded Google Camera’s app description says, “Never miss a moment with the fully redesigned Pixel Camera.” The description also gives you a hint of what you can do with the camera app. It reads, “Take fantastic pictures and videos using features such as Portrait, Night Sight, Time Lapse, and Cinematic Blur.”

More About the Redesigned Google Pixel Camera

While the app will have the same name across different Pixel devices, its version isn’t the same. For example, the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Fold, and Tablet gets the version 9.0. On the other hand, the recently released Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are running on version 9.1 and will get a patch.

It’s worth noting that the new Google Pixel Camera app is only available to the devices that are running Android 14. And the version for the Wear OS works only on the devices running Wear OS 3 and above. Also, for the Wear OS devices, you need to keep them connected to Pixel smartphones.

Interestingly, Google is using the Pixel Camera app listing to highlight the “Pixel 8 Pro Features.” That includes the 50MP High Res capturing feature and Pro Controls. Similarly, the screenshots of the app in the Google Play Store are from Pixel 8 Pro.
