The Russian government has announced plans for the active deployment of 5G networks in major cities, with the process set to commence in 2026. This development is a significant step in the country’s technological advancement and is expected to have far-reaching implications. The report from TASS News Agency quotes the Russian Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, Maksut Shadayev. Mr. Shadayev said

“Russian cities will see active deployment of 5G networks. Installation of domestic base stations will begin in 2026.”

Mr Shadayev made the statement while introducing 5G base stations at a Russian exhibition and forum. Shadayev also added that Russia is preparing to launch network service preparatory work in 2025. It also plans to connect Russian base stations to friendly countries. As we all know, many countries are not on good terms with Russia at the moment. The reason for this is because of the special military operation which the country is carrying out in Ukraine. For this reason, Russia will only connect its 5G base stations with friendly countries.

Not just 5G but…

The minister also had something to say about the next-generation network after 5G. According to him, at the moment, the 6G network is currently being studied. He said that Russia is in the data-gathering stage and R&D work will begin next year.

Last month, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media also announced plans to decide on the “digital dividend” frequency allocation model for 5G network development by March 2024. According to reports, Russia currently has two options: holding an auction or allocating it to a state-owned company. The company will then be responsible for sharing frequencies with mobile operators.

Previously, Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin said that the government would allocate an additional approximately 3.5 billion rubles for base station production to promote operators’ transition to 5G networks. This means that Russia is willing to invest over $37 million just for 5G base stations.

In January this year, Russian telecom operators signed long-term contracts worth more than 100 billion rubles (just over $1 billion) with Russian base station manufacturers. Russia also stated that operators will only be able to purchase domestic base stations from 2028. According to the Russian government, the total supply of base stations will reach 75,000 by 2030.

The Significance of 5G Deployment in Russia

The decision to deploy 5G networks in major Russian cities marks a pivotal moment in the country’s technological evolution. With 5G technology, Russia aims to significantly enhance its digital infrastructure, paving the way for a wide range of innovative applications and services.

It is an important component of the country’s economic growth, covered by the national program “Digital Economy of the Russian Federation”. Forecasts suggest commercial deployments of 5G in Russia from 2020, with the total 5G base set to reach 46 million by 2025, equivalent to 20% of the total mobile market. However, the trajectory of 5G in Russia is uncertain due to the hesitation of the Russian military to give up its rights to the contested 3.4 to 3.8 GHz frequency band. Active deployment of 5G networks at domestic base stations will begin in large Russian cities in 2026. The deployment of advanced Private LTE and 5G technologies helps to optimize production processes in all industries. Despite uncertainties, the Russian government is investing in 5G and has a roadmap in place to speed up the 5G transition.
