Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Survives A Freeze Test

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Samsung stepped up its game with the build quality of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It has recently gone through a scratch test, which the phone passed with flying colors. The phone even did well in a drop test. All of this suggests that the device should pass the test of time without major blemishes if used with proper care.

Now it’s time for an extreme freeze test. But for the sake of comparison, it’s not just the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra that went through this extreme test. Instead, the latest flagship is pitted against the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

How Did the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Do in the Extreme Freeze Test?

As you can see from the video attached below, all three flagships have gone through an initial checking phase. This phase involves testing that the speakers, cameras, and charging ports of the phones are working correctly. After this check, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Pixel 8 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max were submerged in a box filled with water.

This water-filled box with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the other flagships sat in the fridge for six hours. When the box came out, the three phones were sitting inside an ice slab, which was kept sitting for thawing.

After the phones were free from the slab, the secondary test phase took place. In this, the cameras, charging ports, and the speakers are once again tested. They all passed without showcasing any noticeable issues. That is, every functionality, including the touch response, worked flawlessly. However, initially, there was a fog buildup on the Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

But the fog did eventually subside, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 Pro looked brand new again. Check out the video attached above to learn more about the test. Now, while this test does showcase that the flagships can handle extreme temperatures, you need to note that the depth of the water was minimal.

Things can take a turn if the phone is kept for freezing in depths over 1.5 meters. That’s where the hydrostatic pressure becomes extreme. So, even if the phones have a relatively high IP rating, you should leave them freezing in higher water depths intentionally.

About the IP Ratings of the Phones Tested

As this test involves water, it would be a good idea to talk about the IP ratings of the smartphones tested. All of them, including the recently released Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, come with an IP68 rating. This rating means the smartphone can resist water at a maximum depth of 1.5 meters.

But note that this water depth rating is for fresh water. For liquids that have other sediments or salt water, there will be more liquid pressure. And when there’s more liquid pressure, it will be hard for the water-resistant sealant of the phones to prevent water from coming inside. That’s one of the reasons why phones generally don’t survive when retrieved from seawater.

However, the IP68 rating of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and other flagships tested isn’t only for water. This rating also means that the smartphones can withstand small dust particles. This includes sand and dirt, making it worry-free for the users to carry their phones on the beach.

Of course, it should be noted that the IP68 rating isn’t about phones being dunked and frozen in the water. So, the fact that all the flagships have survived this without showcasing any issues is amazing.
