Google Weather: All Android devices are getting the new look

After a period of anticipation fueled by leaks, Google rolled out a significant redesign of its popular Weather app earlier this year. This update goes beyond aesthetics, adhering to the Material You design language while also presenting information in a more user-friendly and organized manner.

Initially launched on Pixel devices, the new Google Weather has since found its way onto select Samsung Galaxy phones. Now, the update appears to be expanding its reach. Gradually becoming available on a wider range of Android devices from various manufacturers. Notably, some older models running Android 11 have also been avaialable in this rollout. Ensuring a broader base of users can benefit from the improvements.

Simplifying the User Experience

One of the most striking changes in the new interface is the move away from the previous three tabs structure (Today, Tomorrow, 10 Days). Instead, a single, streamlined section takes center stage. Here, a carousel allows for effortless navigation through the next 24 hours of weather forecasts.

The information architecture has been revamped for enhanced clarity. The location search bar adopts a pill-shaped design, while essential weather details – wind speed, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and UV index – are now displayed prominently within the current forecast section. These details are presented on visually appealing cards with rounded corners.

Visually Appealing Enhancements

The update introduces a fresh visual aesthetic that complements the Material You design principles. Weather illustrations are presented in a panoramic format, creating a more immersive experience. The beloved Google Weather mascot, the ever-present frog, continues to make an appearance. Albeit in a slightly smaller form and set against new backgrounds.

Wider Availability and User Control

Initially exclusive to Pixel and select Samsung devices, the new Google Weather is now becoming available to a broader range of Android phones. Including models from OnePlus, Honor, and even older Nokia devices with Android 11. It’s important to note that the rollout is server-side, meaning some users might need to wait a little longer until the update reaches their specific devices.

To check if you have the new Google Weather interface, simply access the weather information through Discover on your Android phone or by searching for weather in your browser. Clicking on the displayed information will take you directly to the Google Weather app.

For users who might prefer the previous layout, there’s an option to regain access to the older design with the help of the third-party “Frog Weather” app, available for free on Google Play.

The redesigned Google Weather represents a commitment to providing users with a more intuitive and visually appealing experience for staying informed about weather conditions. The expansion to a wider range of devices ensures that a larger user base can benefit from these improvements.
