Huawei Mate X7 Leak Teases Ultra-Thin Foldable With Next-Gen Cameras

Huawei isn’t sitting still. Just months after launching the Mate X6, the company is reportedly gearing up for its next foldable—the Mate X7. If the latest leaks from China are accurate (and they often are, at least directionally), the Mate X7 won’t just iterate. It could shift the conversation again around ultra-thin foldables and camera tech.

Huawei Mate X7

A Bigger, Sharper, Tougher Inner Display

Let’s start with the inside: a 7.95-inch LTPO OLED panel with a so-called “2K” resolution and ultra-thin glass layered on top. That’s close to tablet territory when fully unfolded, and LTPO means dynamic refresh rates to help with power management. No word yet on the exact Hz range, but 1–120Hz is a safe guess based on past Huawei releases.

Water resistance is also teased—though notably, the actual IP rating isn’t confirmed. If Huawei pulls off something close to IPX8 (as seen in Samsung’s foldables), that alone would be newsworthy. Foldables haven’t always been the most durable devices, and Huawei knows that reputation still lingers.

The Camera System: 50MP x3?

Now, this part’s a bit more complicated. Apparently, Huawei is testing two main sensor options: a 50MP sensor with a 1/1.56″ format, and another also at 50MP but using a larger 1/1.3″ sensor. Both will feature a physical variable aperture, something Huawei’s been steadily improving since the P60 Pro.

The leak also mentions a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, which reportedly doubles as a macro shooter—a clever, space-saving move. Add a multi-spectral camera into the mix (likely for color accuracy or niche imaging enhancements), and it’s clear Huawei isn’t dialing back its hardware ambitions. There’s also an ultrawide camera, though it wasn’t detailed in this particular rumor drop. The combination of physical variable aperture and multi-spectral imaging could give Huawei an edge in computational photography—an area where Chinese OEMs have been increasingly pushing boundaries.

Design: Ultra-Thin Again?

No precise measurements are available yet, but the Huawei Mate X7 will arrive as another “ultra-thin book-style foldable.” That’s in line with the Mate X6, which was notably slimmer than many of its competitors. Huawei seems intent on avoiding the thick-and-clunky foldable stereotype—while still managing to stuff in serious camera hardware and a large display.

Launch Timeline Still Unclear

There’s no solid launch date attached to the leak, but based on the Mate X6’s November 2024 debut, a late Q3 or early Q4 release seems likely. Huawei tends to stick to a fairly consistent yearly cadence with its premium foldables, even under the pressure of U.S. trade restrictions and limited 5G chip access.

If those issues persist, international release may again be limited or delayed, especially outside China. But with domestic demand for foldables still rising, Huawei has strong incentive to keep innovating—whether or not the Mate X7 ever ships with Google services.

First Impression? It Sounds Ambitious.

It’s always best to treat leaks with caution, but Huawei’s track record on delivering bold hardware makes this one hard to ignore. If everything pans out—a nearly 8-inch OLED screen, 50MP triple cameras, water resistance, and a slim folding chassis—the Huawei Mate X7 could be the foldable to beat this fall.
