OpenAI just changed how ChatGPT Voice works at a fundamental level. The new GPT-Live model family is rolling out globally today across iOS, Android, and ChatGPT.com — and it replaces the turn-based back-and-forth that's defined AI voice assistants for years with something that feels much more like a real conversation.

Summary

  • Full-duplex architecture: GPT-Live listens and speaks simultaneously, making several interaction decisions per second — including whether to respond, pause, interrupt, or search the web.
  • GPT-5.5 handles the heavy lifting: For web search, complex reasoning, and agentic tasks, GPT-Live hands off in the background while the conversation continues uninterrupted.
  • Two models, tiered by plan: GPT-Live-1 becomes the default for Go, Plus, and Pro users. GPT-Live-1 mini replaces the default for Free users.
  • 150 million weekly voice users: That's the current scale of ChatGPT Voice and Dictation — GPT-Live rolls out to all of them.
  • No video or screen sharing at launch: Those features remain on Advanced Voice Mode while OpenAI adds support in a future update.

What Full-Duplex Actually Changes

ChatGPT's original voice experience used a cascaded pipeline — separate models for speech recognition, language processing, and text-to-speech, each passing the baton to the next. Advanced Voice Mode improved this by combining audio processing into a single model, but it still waited for you to finish speaking before responding. That created an unnatural rhythm, with silence-detection sometimes causing awkward interruptions.
GPT-Live replaces this entirely. It processes audio continuously while generating speech at the same time. The model makes several micro-decisions per second — continue listening, start speaking, acknowledge with a natural "mhmm," pause, interrupt, or fire off a background tool call. The result is a conversation that doesn't feel like it's waiting for you to finish your sentence before engaging.

GPT-5.5 as the Background Engine

When a question requires web search, reasoning, or multi-step execution, GPT-Live offloads the task to GPT-5.5 while the voice conversation keeps going. Results come back when they're ready, and GPT-Live slots them naturally into the dialogue. Multiple background tasks can run in parallel — meaning you can ask a follow-up while it's still pulling search results for your first question.

New Features Alongside the Architecture Upgrade

The updated experience adds natural acknowledgements — "got it," "sure," "mhmm" — during conversation. It handles background noise better. Instant, Medium, and High reasoning modes give users control over how deep the model goes. Rich visual cards cover weather, sports, and stock data. Nine built-in voices have been remastered. And live translation is now fully supported within the full-duplex framework.

Safety Built for Voice

OpenAI added safeguards specifically for voice interactions, including real-time intervention while the model is still speaking, crisis helpline support routing for self-harm conversations, age-appropriate behavior for teen users, parental notification controls, and protections against voice impersonation. API access is planned for a future release.
