One of the year's most important events for the smartphone market finally has an official date! Apple has
finally determined that September 9 will be the day when the world will meet the
iPhone 17 lineup. Right after the confirmation, the company started sending out the media invites.
iPhone 17 Series Confirmed for September 9
During the event, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17,
iPhone 17 Air,
iPhone 17 Pro, and
iPhone 17 Pro Max. The tagline Apple chose for the event is "awe-dropping". It's a weird term that mixes "awe-inspiring" with "jaw-dropping". It seems that Apple has been learning a thing or two from the marketing terms of some Chinese brands (cough.. cough..).
The event will be taking place at 10 AM PT, at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park in Cupertino, California. That time translates as 1 PM in New York, 6 PM in London, 7 PM in central Europe, and 10:30 PM in India.
Apple's iPhone 17 Air - This Year's Biggest Novelty
While the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max are expected as upgrades for their predecessors, there is a major change in this lineup - the iPhone 17 Air. As we've learned through multiple rumors, Apple is ditching the Plus lineup. The "larger standard iPhone" proved to be a commercial failure, just like the iPhone mini series that it had replaced. Now, Apple is taking another bet on the fourth iPhone - thickness.
The iPhone 17 Air is the biggest novelty here, with rumors pointing to a thickness between 5.5mm and 6.5mm. Obviously, there are some sacrifices in this new design approach. The device will have a smaller battery. However, it is reportedly coming with the Apple A19 Pro instead of the non-Pro version. So this will basically be a Pro iPhone with a crazily-thin form factor and tiny battery. Time will tell if the Air will be able to exorcize this cursed slot in the iPhone lineup.
Apart from the processor upgrade, the new iPhones are also getting major redesigns. As per the leaks, we will see the design of the cameras taking a major departure from the usual island to visor-like cameras that quite resemble the Pixel series and even some Xiaomi devices.
It's worth noting that September 9 will also be the date for new updates in the
Apple Watch family. We wouldn't discard other surprises on the same day, so stay tuned.
