Meta Introduces New Line of Smart Glasses, Starting with $799 Ray-Ban Display

At this year’s Meta Connect conference in Menlo Park, Mark Zuckerberg revealed Meta’s latest push into wearable technology: the $799 Ray-Ban Meta Display glasses, the company’s first consumer-ready model featuring a built-in digital screen.

The glasses blend Ray-Ban’s familiar style with Meta’s neural technology. A small display sits inside the lenses and can be controlled through the Meta Neural Band, an EMG wristband that translates hand gestures into commands. This setup allows wearers to view short videos, read and reply to messages, or interact with on-screen prompts without obstructing their vision. The display fades when not in use, preserving the experience of regular eyewear.

The release builds on Meta’s earlier audio-only Ray-Ban smart glasses and takes a step closer to its more ambitious Orion augmented reality project, still in development. Unlike Orion, which aims to overlay 3D visuals onto a person’s surroundings, the Ray-Ban Display glasses focus on everyday functions in a slimmer, more affordable package.

During the keynote, Zuckerberg highlighted the balance between fashion and function:
“These are glasses with the classic style you’d expect from Ray-Ban, but they’re the first AI-powered glasses with a high-resolution display and a fully weighted neural band.”
The glasses will be available in the U.S. starting September 30. A demo moment turned lighthearted when Zuckerberg attempted to place a call to Meta’s tech chief Andrew Bosworth several times without success, joking, “This is, uh — you know, it happens.”

Expanding the Smart Glasses Lineup

Alongside the Ray-Ban Display model, Meta introduced two additional pairs:
  • Oakley Meta Vanguard ($499) – Designed for athletes, these glasses feature a wraparound design, nine hours of battery life, and 3K video recording. They can connect with Garmin fitness watches to track stats such as heart rate using Meta’s AI assistant. Preorders begin immediately, with shipping set for October 21.
  • Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) ($379) – An upgrade to last year’s model, the second generation boasts twice the battery life (up to 8 hours) and a stronger camera capable of 3K Ultra HD video. These are available starting today.
The Oakley Vanguard builds on the June release of the Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, adding a helmet-friendly frame button and louder speakers for outdoor use.

Beyond Glasses

Meta also announced Horizon TV, a new app designed for Quest VR headsets. The platform will stream shows, sports, and movies in partnership with companies such as Disney and Universal Pictures.
With this wave of product launches, Meta is clearly positioning its wearable technology not just as futuristic experiments but as consumer-ready tools for communication, fitness, and entertainment.
