Smartphone Market of China Fell by 6.7% in April 2019

China Telecomtsu Institute released a research document dubbed as ‘China's domestic smartphone market operation analysis report’. It shows that in April 2019, the total handset market shipments were 36.53 million units, up 6.7% year-on-year, of which 34.848 million were 4G phones, up 6.6% year-on-year, accounting for 95.4%. The 2G and 3G phone shipments were 1.670 million units and 12,000 units, respectively. From January to April 2019, the domestic phone market totaled 113 million units, down 6.7% year-on-year, of which the 4G smartphones were 108 million units, down 5.6% year-on-year.

In China’s smartphone market, in April 2019, 42 new models were listed, down 23.6% year-on-year. The new models include 7 2G phones and 35 4G phones. The report also shows there were 167 new models in the January-April period, down 36.0% year-on-year. The new models included 31 2G phones, 1 3G model, and 135 4G smartphones.

Moreover, in April 2019, the Chinese brand smartphone shipments reached 33.929 million units, up 7.2% year-on-year, accounting for 92.9%. There were 35 new models, down 32.7% year-on-year. From January to April 2019, the domestic brand smartphone shipments reached 105 million units, down 2.5% year-on-year, accounting for 92.4%. There were 147 new models, down 39.3% year-on-year.
Honestly, this is quite expected because there are myriads of China-based smartphone vendors that are launching amazing models every month. In this sense, April was no exception. Just recall what devices were announced in the past month and you'll understand why 35 out of 42 new models launched in China's market were designed by the domestic manufacturers.

In April 2019, 34 new smartphone models running on Android were launched, down 20.9% year-on-year, accounting for 81.0%. However, from January to April 2019, 132 new models with Google’s mobile OS were listed in the Chinese smartphone market, down 34.3% year-on-year.
