The fusion of
Android operating system and
TV is slowly but surely taking off in China, with many local companies either producing TV’s with
Android built in or a set top
box which allows Android apps to run on your current
TV.
The AndroidBox M6 is one of the latter devices, and much like the
Apple TV is able to bring some very welcome multi-media features to your living-room.
The AndroidBox brings Android to your
TV in a slightly different way to most Android
TV devices in that it uses a mobile version of Android,
Gingerbread in this
case, rather than the official Google
TV O.S.
The choice to use a modifiied Gingerbread
OS is more likely due to licencing rules Google stiplifies, so the mobile
OS is probably much easier and cheaper of local companies to use.
The case of the M6 is quite plainly modeled on the Apple TV, but is quite a bit larger than it’s iOS counterpart.
Inside the black
box sits an 800 mhz Cortex A9 CPU, 512Mb RAM, and 2Gb of built in
flash memory, which by itself would be a little worthless, but thankfully there is an
SD expansion slot which will let you use 32Gb micro
SD cards.
If the mix of internal
flash storage and
SD card is still not enough, the M6 also has 2 x
USB 2.0 which will allow the playback of 1080p HD video, music or applications from either a USB stick or external hard drive.
Internet can be accesesd one the AndroidBox Google
TV wither through the built in Ethernet port of over Wi-Fi.
The M6 is currently on the market now for $129.99 from certain online retailers which is actually $30 more than an Apple TV, but the extra $30 does bring you a lot more expansion and sharing options when compared to the closed Apple system.
