Xiaomi didn't slow down after selling 32,759 vehicles in May alone. It accelerated. On July 8, the company
officially confirmed a new automotive sub-brand called Sky Nomad — registered in China as Xiaomi Pengcheng. And unlike the
SU7 or
YU7, which target performance-focused urban drivers, Sky Nomad is built for families who travel far and want space, comfort, and the ability to drive anywhere without charging anxiety.
Summary
- Sky Nomad is official: Xiaomi confirmed the new sub-brand on July 8 with an ad campaign already live across major city screens in China and a dedicated WeChat presence.
- First vehicle: the N90 SUV: A 5.3-meter extended-range EV with a 3.1-meter wheelbase, offered in five-seat and seven-seat layouts.
- 70kWh+ battery, 500km pure electric range: When the battery runs low, a 1.5L turbocharged generator kicks in — not connected to the wheels, purely for electricity generation.
- Total range exceeds 1,500km: Full battery plus a full tank of fuel. Range anxiety essentially eliminated.
- LiDAR on the roof, retractable door steps, rugged styling: Premium family SUV positioning at a price not yet announced.
Why Sky Nomad and Why Now
Xiaomi's existing vehicles are excellent at doing one thing: going fast in a straight line and handling city roads. The
SU7 Ultra holds the Nürburgring production car record. The YU7 GT recently set a driverless lap time at the same circuit. None of that matters to a family of five packing for a two-week camping trip through Xinjiang.
Sky Nomad exists to serve that buyer. Extended-range EV technology — EREV — is the right powertrain choice for this use case. You get the quiet, smooth performance of an EV on short trips, but when you're 300 kilometers from the nearest fast charger, the onboard 1.5-liter turbocharged generator just keeps producing electricity. It doesn't drive the wheels directly. It refills the battery. The result is over 1,500km of combined range — enough to cross several countries without stopping specifically to charge.
The N90's Design Signals Intent
The N90 is unmistakably built for adventure. Prominent blocky headlights, a trapeze-shaped front air intake, a high hood line, and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor give it a rugged premium look — closer to a Land Rover Defender than a Tesla Model X. Electrically deployed door steps help passengers climb into a tall cabin. The 5.3-meter body and 3.1-meter wheelbase put it in full-size territory.
Xiaomi's Automotive Portfolio Is Getting Serious
When Xiaomi launched the SU7 in 2024, most automakers expected it to be a niche experiment. Two years later, Xiaomi is delivering nearly 33,000 cars per month in China, has a performance sedan, a performance SUV, and now a family-focused EREV brand. The portfolio is starting to look less like a tech company dabbling in cars and more like a genuine multi-segment automaker.
Pricing for the N90 hasn't been confirmed yet. Given the 70kWh+ battery, LiDAR, and premium interior positioning, it will almost certainly land above the YU7's starting price. A formal market debut and pricing reveal are expected later in 2026.
