Xiaomi is
updating its budget streaming lineup with the launch of the
Xiaomi TV Stick HD 2nd Gen. This new model brings a few upgrades over the older HD stick, while keeping the focus on basic, affordable streaming. The design has been
refreshed and now looks closer to the Xiaomi TV Stick 4K 2nd Gen, with smoother and more rounded edges.
A New Generation for the Streaming Device Hit
Even with the new look, some older choices remain. The stick still uses a micro-USB port for power, which feels outdated today. The storage expansion is also limited. There is no microSD slot, and it is unclear whether USB-OTG works, so adding extra storage may be difficult. Perhaps, this isn't a major issue for the users of this kind of device. But considering what can still be done with this device, more storage would be appreciated.
This Xiaomi TV Stick HD 2nd Gen is made for Full HD TVs. It supports up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, so it is not meant for 4K content. That makes it a better fit for older TVs or for users who use standard streaming plans. The stick runs on Google TV and comes ready with apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. The remote includes shortcut buttons for these apps, which makes access quick and simple. You can also cast videos and photos from your phone.
Xiaomi TV Stick HD 2nd Gen Technical Specs
There are some gains in performance thanks to the arrival of a newer chipset. It uses a quad-core Cortex-A55 processor with a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. Xiaomi says it is about 38 percent faster than the previous model. Even with this upgrade, memory and storage stay the same at 1GB of RAM and 8GB of space, which is quite limited for modern apps.
For video, the Xiaomi TV Stick HD 2nd Gen supports HDR10+, but your TV also needs to support it to see the benefit. A more important upgrade is AV1 decoding, which helps streaming apps run more smoothly and use less data.
Audio support includes DTS:X and Dolby Audio, provided your TV or sound system can handle them. The device connects using Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. The remote also has an IR feature, so it can turn your TV on and off.
The Xiaomi TV Stick HD 2nd Gen should arrive in more markets soon. Unfortunately, pricing has not been shared yet, but it is expected to cost less than the 4K version.
