Geekbench shows off what the Mediatek MT6795 is made of

We’ve been very impressed with the performance of the latest Mediatek chipsets, but looking at the scores from the MT6795 there is a lot more in store.

Mediatek already managed to bag a first place for it’s MT6595 with the top average Antutu scores of 2014. Their next chip builds on the MT6595 with similar core technologies but a 64bit architecture instead.

Leaks of the MT6795 have looked very promising, now a Geekbench score gives us another hint at the processors amazing performance.

Gizchina News of the week

The Mediatek MT6795 managed to score a huge 4536 points in the Multi-core benchmark, beating the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 which scored just 4345 points.

Both chipsets are 8-core, 64bit processors running 4 x Cortex A57 and 4 x Cortex A53 cores, and both were running Android 5.0 Lollipop for the benchmark.

We cannot wait to see which company launches the first MT6795 phone and put the device through it paces in real life testing situations.

Been waiting for this chip for a long time. The single core score looks a little low to me however, but its only running at 2GHz and not the full speed 2.2GHz. Knowing MT however, they will launch the 2GHz version in the March and the the 2.2GHz will probably be the ‘turbo’ version and will launch a few months later. I reckon it will be April/May before we see the full speed version in an actual handset.

It’s a mid range chip no matter what. 2.2ghz or not it’s still an A53

Thanks, was just looking at the very same page when you sent me the link! lol Also found another link saying it has 4xA57 and 4xA53 cores, this benchmark sort of confirms it..

Want to see it in a device before judging it. So far MediaTek has done all very well this year, and I hope MT6795 will be one more success for 2015 and compete with ease against SnapDragon and Exynos SoC’s.
As a Meizu user, I wouldn’t mind see this (or an upgrade of this) SoC, or Exynos SoC to the new MX5 later this year!

That score is poor actually (just 10% higher than the MT6752) but it’s just a dev board and clearly they are still working on the software. The final version will score better.

from the CPU side, we know they deliver very well. It’s the GPU that has to be improved, it usually suffers there compared to qualcomm

well i dont think you will see a difference while normaly using it and also if you have a rooted device you can simply turn the mode on to use multiple cores all the time (battery-drain ftw xD)

Thus the relatively low Single Thread score and high Multi Thread score.

don’t forget mediatek go for phones in the 100-300usd range mostly, while qualcomm is usually in much higher priced phones, with only a few (an not really worthy) low-end SoCs… if you consider this, mediatek’s CPUs in a quality-price balance are the best solutions, the GPU is the only thing it should really matter in the choice IMHO, qualcomm has really the Ace in their pocket with the Adreno, but only for people who really need it, for typical users even mediatek’s malis are more than enough.

Previous test benchmark showed MT6795 doesn’t have A57 cores, only A53 cores, just like the MT6752 chipset. Only higher clocked CPU and a different GPU.

    • Rob
      February 25, 2015

That was wrong as it uses 4xA57 and 4xA53 cores.

      • February 25, 2015

I actually thought that as well, but from several sources I have now heard that it indeed only uses A53 cores. I hope we will see some final specs of this SoC soon to be sure about it.

        • Rob
          February 25, 2015

Thats odd because I’ve seen it from various sources claiming 4xA57 cores @ upto 2.2GHz and 4xA53 @ 1.7GHz. If it actually turned out to be the MT6752 with a different GPU it would be very disappointing indeed and a bad move by MT.

      • Duarte Bruno
        February 25, 2015

That’s not what they say on their page. Unlike all their other chipsets they do not disclose the CPUs used. So, why would that be unless it’s just A53s agressively clocked?

Doesn’t make a lot of sense, nor does the fact they they seem to very secretive about the actual cores used. Not sure how they are managing the 480fps on this chip, the GPU ain’t that powerful and nor are the cores if they do indeed turn out to be A53’s.

          • Duarte Bruno
            February 26, 2015

No CPU can process 480fps of HD video, not even desktop ones. This requieres a massively paralllel approach and thus what it needs is a GPU with a serious amount of thread/block processing units. The answer must lay there.

            • Rob
              February 26, 2015

This is why I’m not convinced of the 8 A53 cores, neither these or the single G6200 GPU are that powerful so to do this as you rightly point out will take a lot of muscle power, but from where??

            • Duarte Bruno
              February 26, 2015

I’ve found some reports that this G6200 GPU is suposedly as powerful as the one on the iPhone 5s (which is a bit contradictory as it uses the G6430) but we also see numerous reports that it’s the same GPU of the MT6595 which is widely claimed to support 4K@30p.
4K@30p demands the same bandwitdh and processing power of 1080p120, so now they are claiming 4x times that processing power. Maybe they kept the architecture and just upped the number of shaders? Maybe they slipped on the specs and they mean that its 720p480? Still that would require 2x the power of the MT6595 GPU…
I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Perhaps the power was always there but it’s the camera’s sensors that are lacking (we don’t even have reached 1080p120 anywhere…)

              BTW: http://www.androidauthority.com/soc-guide-autumn-2014-514614/

              They say it’s 8x A53 @2.2Ghz.

Lets hope it releases soon, still no sign of it since it was officially announced in August. Still having trouble understanding why the cores of their other SoC’s were revealed at the time they were announced and this one wasn’t and even though we must be weeks away from a release date still almost nothing is known for sure. They may have made some changes to the GPU but I guess we won’t know till the first handsets start appearing…..

Real important thing about MT6795 devices will be price. The chip could haven’t join to competition for premium devices with that specs. A bit slower even than MT6595.

With aggressive pricing -hopefully- we could see it between $200-250 range from some brands like Meizu, Xiaomi etc. On the other hand with some brands like HTC and Oppo it’s price could rise as high as $500 IMO.

The MT6795 can be a good performer, but it can also be average or even fall behind the SD801, depending on the app you’re using, the current load, and the OS (of course Lollipop will help here because of the 64-bit support). I suggest reading this for some interesting bits:

    http://mobilesemi.blogspot.sg/2015/02/early-benchmarks-mt6795-show-high.html#Blog1

    – “Single-core integer performance is not spectacular and below that of the previous generation high-end chips such as Snapdragon 801. Although this is compatible with the use of medium-performance Cortex-A53 cores, integer single-core performance is actually lower than the mid-range MT6752, despite the higher clock rate, pointing to continuing hardware performance problems with the chip.”

    – “In a direct comparison with the MT6752, which has a comparable CPU configuration but clocked lower and has only a 32-bit memory interface, the MT6795 is only slightly faster…”

    – “The MT6795 is clearly slower than its 32-bit predecessor MT6595 (which uses high-performance Cortex-A17 and Cortex-A7 cores in a big.LITTLE configuration) in most metrics, with only the heavy weighting and large performance gain for the AES and SHA1 cryptography tests (due to the new ARMv8 instruction set) shifting the advantage for the overall score towards the MT6795.”

    – “When making a comparison with a median entry for the high performance Exynos 5433 (Exynos 7 Octa) inside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the MT6795 fairly consistently shows clearly lower single-core performance but higher multi-core performance.”

    – “Based on a closed-door presentation event at the MWC, MediaTek appears to have rebranded MT6795 as Helio X10 with future Helio P series products also being announced.”

Maybe things will improve as they finalize the hardware, or maybe we should really be excited about the MT6796 instead. The same blog linked above has a whole bunch of fascinating info about mobile chips in general.
