Canalys: Huawei takes the lead in the Chinese smartphone market

Good news for Huawei fans (and officials I guess) after the latest report by Canalys, regarding the sales during the first quarter of 2017 in China.

According to their findings, Huawei managed to move past Oppo and take the lead in the country, with 21 million units in the first three months of this year, accounting for 18% of the market. Oppo moved to second place with 20 million sales but with an impressive 55% year-on-year growth!

Vivo is third in the Chinese market with 15% market share and 17 million units shipped and all 3 previously mentioned companies account for more than 50% of the total shipments, a sign that the Chinese market is seriously consolidating.

Gizchina News of the week

Apple came fourth in China according to the report and Xiaomi fifth, with just 9 million shipments during the first 3 months, a sign that they have been under huge pressure from Huawei’s Honor brand. Note however that Oppo, Vivo (and OnePlus) all belong to BBK Electronics and if we were to count all their shipments as one, then the company would be No.1 in China with huge distance from the second.

According to Canalys, 114 million smartphones in total were shipped in China during the first quarter of 2017.
