If you are disappointed that OnePlus decided on last years Snapdragon 800 chipset, you will be happy to hear that Xiaomi will probably be using an 801 in the Mi3S!

Xiaomi’s Mi3S has made it in to the rumour mills cafeteria today and sources are talking loudly about the phones updates which include more memory, faster processor and added network support.

According to sources the Xiaomi Mi3S will boast the Snapdragon 801 chipset, which we had hoped the OnePlus One would have received, along with 3GB RAM, 8 mega-pixel front camera, 13 mega-pixel rear and 4G LTE (FDD- LTE and TD-LTE).

The Mi3S is expected to make it appearance during April’s Xiaomi festival at a price of 1999 Yuan. Also, believed to be at the festival are the new Hongmi phones and a new 5.5-inch Xiaomi 3 which could replace the Xiaomi Mi2A.

There has been a lot of confusion on the matter of Snapdragon 800 vs. 801.

Qualcomm has went out of their way to claim that the MSM8974-AB in Sony Xperia Z2 is classified under Snapdragon 801. I wonder now, what’s the difference between the Z2’s MSM8974-AB than the MSM8974-AB in, say, Xplay 3S or Samsung Galaxy Round? Would you also call them Snapdragon 801?

Also, the Mi3 uses MSM8274-AB, which, Qualcomm themselves claimed, has the exact same features and performance as MSM8974-AB (sans LTE). Wouldn’t this also mean that the processor in the Mi3 is already the ‘new’ Snapdragon 801?

Here is another spin: following Qualcomm’s own classification, it is likely that the SoC in OnePlus One (benchmark results pointed to it being MSM8974-AB) is ‘technically’ Snapdragon 801 as well.
