Xiaomi like to keep their device fresh with a refresh throughout their life-cycle. The original M1 received an update to the M1S, and so on with the M2S, and even the entry-level Redmi.
The Xiaomi Redmi 1S shares the same basic design and hardware as the older Mediatek powered phone, but receives an important processor upgrade. The processor in the Redmi 1S is a more powerful 1.6Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 unit with a more advanced Adreno 305GPU.
