Update: Xiaomi bosses say an Android One device is around the corner

Update: It appears we jumped the gun on this and it actually appears that Xiaomi are merely considering the idea of an Android One device. [ Source ]

Many dissed the Android One scheme of smartphones, when it was released a month back. The program by Google and its hardware partners is turning into a bigger deal than what we initially expected.

That was partly because of other brands like Xiaomi, etc. which made smartphones that were more powerful and cheaper than Android One phones. However, something we just learnt might make you rethink about your opinion on Android One; and it comes from none other than Xiaomi.

Gizchina News of the week

Hugo Barra, who’s lately been the face of the young Chinese company, revealed that an Android One launch from Xiaomi was around the corner. He also mentioned that the company was keen on pushing its existing models into Android One’s scheme of things rather than building an all new smartphone.

It’s highly probably that (if it the Android One – Xiaomi thing does take shape) you see a Redmi 1S or a Redmi Note remodeled into suit the Android One program. What this will also mean is Xiaomi’s devices will be more dev-friendly than ever; something that a lot of buyers have been patiently waiting for since very long.

Doesn’t the Redmi 1S look like a God-sent Android One candidate? Let us know what you think!

That all seems rather inaccurate if the actual source is this http://indiatoday.intoday.in/technology/story/xiaomi-says-it-is-keen-on-making-android-one-phone/1/395415.html
All he’s saying is “maybe but not now”.
If you have another source that says anything else … but i suspect this is a lost in translation matter.

Well … I wish Redmi 1S would receive Vanilla Android One option in the near future, because clearly with MIUI v5 ROM, it has a lot of serious issue. It’s practically unusable.

Not god but in the world of cell phones it is pretty close. If it was a steak it would be a porterhouse. If it was a car it would be a Porsche, all the specs for half the price.

I think this is a great news and may be newly produced models may be sold as android one variant also along with normal miui from xiaomi…..this will definitely build a war like situation in India at least where xiaomi has seen success in short time.

Duh, it makes perfectly sound business sense especially since we’re dealing with lower to mid-range handsets with lower profit margins; adopt Google’s Android One platform and save tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars on software development and support since updates will now come directly from Google.
