ASUS has officially confirmed that its fan can expect the new ZenFone 8 series to appear a little earlier than usual. The company confirmed that the launch event will be held on May 12th, 2021. According to the announcement, the new smartphones will go official at 7 PM CEST. The upcoming lineup of smartphones might include three devices. The ZenFone 8, ZenFone 8 Pro, and the ZenFone 8 Mini. In the previous reports, these handsets were expected to launch with flip cameras, or at least one of them. Now, however, it seems that ASUS is really leaving the unique appeal of its smartphones behind. The new smartphones will likely come with a standard rear-camera setup and a punch-hole selfie.

ASUS today shared a video on its official Twitter handle teasing the launch of the upcoming ZenFone 8 series. The video teaser suggests that the ZenFone 8 may not continue the flip camera trend and launch with a standard rear-camera setup. The teaser video didn’t reveal the entire design of the handset. However, it should the silhouette of the front panel, hence, confirming what seems to be a top-left-aligned punch-hole.

The ZenFone 8 will join the punch-hole bandwagon

The existence of a punch-hole clearly confirms that the upcoming ASUS ZenFone 8 will say goodbye to the bezel-free screen. It will ditch the flip mechanism that allowed users to take selfies with the main camera setup. The selfie camera, probably will not be on par with the main sensors found in the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro, for example. However, there is always the possibility that this is a generic teaser to not disclose the design of its upcoming smartphone.

When the first rumors about the ZenFone 8 series started to appear, we’ve spotted info about a ZenFone 8 Flip. On that occasion, we thought that the ZenFone 8 Flip would be the only variant with a flip camera. However, the device seems to not be coming to this event. Maybe during a “one more thing” launch? Only time will tell.

As far as the three variants are concerned, the ZenFone 8 will start the family but will be accompanied by a larger ZenFone 8 Pro will incremental upgrades in specifications. The ZenFone 8 Mini as the name implies is a smaller variant, but that will still impress the hardware department. All three devices will hit the market with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. The mini will have a 5.9-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

We expect more details to be revealed in the next few days. Will you miss the flipping camera mechanism?
