OnePlus resumes Android 12 Developer Preview program for OnePlus 9 series

OnePlus is well known for following Google closely with every newer Android version. The company is taking more time to update its smartphones now that it has a larger portfolio. However, as far as the most recent flagships are concerned, they should keep receiving new Android updates firstly and fastly. Shortly after the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro launch, the devices are made part of the Android 12 Developer Preview Program. The company rolled out the first preview, but it didn’t run as planned. Some devices were bricked after the update and the company was forced to stop the update immediately. Now, however, it is rolling out the Android 12 developer preview build for the OnePlus 9 series hoping for the best.

The company official blog post on the matter states:

“This new version is a hotfix build that fixes the issue causing the original version to get stuck during Factory Reset Protection (FRP) check.” The list of known issues that OnePlus has jotted down on the post include all data loss while flashing the preview build, no video call function after the update, both face and fingerprint unlock being unavailable, multiple interface screens looking “less than desirable”, glitches with working of apps, issues with system stability and chances of camera crashing when in HDR mode.”

Don’t run installing this update if you’re not ready to deal with certain consequences. OnePlus states that the update may still brick some devices. It recommends against non-advanced users installing it. No one wants to turn a super expensive flagship into a paperweight right? There are risks even for advanced users, so proceed with caution. Until the company decides to unveil OxygenOS 12, the new update may not be truly ground-breaking for beta-testers.

The update will be only applicable for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, the duo of 2021 flagships. The Chinese firm is one of the first vendors with an “active” Android 12 developer program. However, the issue of bricking devices certainly is a huge problem for the company. Hopefully, this time around, users will have a better experience.

For most users, the recommendation is to wait for future updates or at least for feedback about this developer preview. The company will keep rolling Developer Previews in the coming months. The full-fledged version of Android 12 will debut in September this year, and OnePlus should follow with OxygenOS 12 official announcement.
