Apple has quietly added a clever repair feature to the
iPhone Duo. The top cover layer of its foldable inner display can be replaced when it starts to wear out or the crease becomes more visible over time.
The important part is the price. In the US, Apple lists the replacement at $19.99 with AppleCare+. The service has to be carried out by Apple or an authorized service provider. Apple has not yet revealed the price without AppleCare+.
It is not a normal screen protector
The replaceable part is the nano-texture cover layer that sits above the actual folding display. Apple's VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, explained that Apple designed the layer to last as long as possible. However, it can eventually wear down, so owners have the option to replace it rather than replace the entire inner display.
This layer also helps reduce reflections and makes the crease less noticeable. Apple's own specifications say the inner display uses more than 10 ultra-thin layers and a custom nano-texture finish.
Apple is not telling you to peel it off
There is an important detail here. Although Apple
describes the layer as replaceable, this does not mean users should remove it at home like a normal screen protector. Current information points to the replacement being handled through Apple Stores or authorized service providers.
That makes sense. The inner display of a foldable phone is far more complex than a regular smartphone screen.
For me, this is one of those small Apple decisions that could make a big difference over several years. The physical crease is still part of the folding panel, but replacing the outer layer can help keep the display looking fresh.
A much cheaper fix than replacing the display
AppleCare+ also lists $99 for an inner display replacement and $29 for certain cover display or back-glass repairs. Accidental damage is listed at $99, while theft and loss replacement costs $149 under the relevant coverage.
The iPhone Duo itself has a 7.6-inch inner OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, plus a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple says the inner panel reaches 3,000 nits peak brightness and uses nano-texture technology to reduce glare.
So, while the $19.99 replacement does not make the foldable display indestructible, it gives iPhone Duo owners a much cheaper way to deal with normal wear.
And honestly, I think this is the kind of detail that matters more than another small camera upgrade. Foldable screens are still expensive and delicate. Giving owners a way to refresh the outer display layer could make the iPhone Duo easier to live with for years.
