2nd Generation Huawei VR Glass To Launch Before 2021 Ends

HUAWEI VR Glass

2nd generation Huawei VR Glass will launch soon, succeeding the original Huawei VR Glass that the Chinese tech company unveiled in 2019. After announcing its first-ever virtual reality glasses, Huawei launched the VR Glass 6DOF Game Set with improved features and 360-degrees controllers in October last year. Regrettably, even after more than a year, the new model hasn’t gone on sale. During the launch event, Huawei assured that developers will be able to get their hands on the device by December 18, 2020.

Furthermore, the company claimed that its VR Glass will go on sale starting from April 2021. Much to the chagrin of those waiting to get their hands on the device, that has not happened yet. Last year’s VR Glass carried a price tag of 2999 Yuan (about $470). Previous reports suggest that the virtual reality glasses weigh just 166 grams, and have a 26.6mm thick lens system. This was a major leap over 2020 VR headsets as far as lightness is concerned. In fact, Huawei got a World VR Industry Conference Innovation Gold Award for this in 2019.

If rumors making the rounds online are anything to go by, the new VR Glass will go official soon. This shred of information comes from noted leaker Teme (@RODENT950). The tipster took to his Twitter account earlier this week to share this information. Huawei is reportedly gearing up to announce a new foldable phone and some other products before this year comes to an end. So, the company could be on the verge of unveiling its new VR headset at the imminent launch event. The VR headset was first showcased at the World VR Industry Conference Cloud Summit last year.

Gizchina News of the week

Huawei gave us a glimpse of the device’s awe-inspiring design, and shed light on some of its key features during the event. However, the company did not divulge pricing details about the upcoming VR headset. As mentioned earlier, the first generation model retailed for 2999 Yuan (about $470) and is currently available for purchase via Vmall. Considering that the successor will offer improved features and upgrades in various areas, it is likely to carry a slightly steeper price tag.

Design & Other Key Features

The 2nd generation Huawei VR Glass (Huawei VR Glass 6DOF Game Set) retains the design of its predecessor. However, it features two cameras at the top for a superior tracking experience. Aside from that, it comes with a pair of Google Daydream-like controllers just like the Oculus Quest. However, it has three buttons rather than two and a joystick. The design of the first generation Huawei VR Glass resembled ski glasses.

The device featured two 2.1-inch LCD displays, that offered a combined resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels, and up to 90Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate depended on the type of device it was connected to. Since it did not come with a built-in battery, the VR glasses weighed just 166 grams. Aside from that, it had two diopter dials that allowed people wearing prescription glasses to adjust the focus.

Furthermore, the Huawei VR glasses are compatible with both Huawei-branded smartphones and PCs. The 2nd generation Huawei VR glass is likely to retain this feature. Also, the headset could draw its juices from an external source such as a connected portable battery pack, PC, or smartphone. Moreover, it could ship with a controller in the box. Details about the 2nd Generation Huawei VR Glass launch date are still scarce. However, it is likely to launch before this year ends.
