New AMD Radeon RX GPUs Offer Very Poor Value – Confirmed by…AMD!

Not a good time to get a new GPU

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

So, there has been a lot of noise regarding the latest AMD Radeon RX GPUs. And to make the gamers know all about what these GPUs can offer, AMD has just published a blog post. It tried to explain why there has never been a better time to get yourself an AMD GPU.

However, its attempt to make the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT appealing fell short. In a chart shared in the blog post, the two GPUs are shown to deliver the worst value for the money instead. In fact, the GPUs offer less than half the frames per dollar compared to AMD’s best-value GPU of the previous generation!

Here’s How the New AMD Radeon RX GPUs Compare to RDNA 2 GPUs

There’s no denying that the two RDNA 3 models, RX 79000 XTX and XT, are the current high-end boards from AMD. And you can not forget that the very best value is not generally found in the high-end models of a GPU range. Still, AMD is in a very awkward spot by comparing the performance of the last Gen RDNA 2 models.

AMD RADEON 7900 XT and XTX

To fill you in, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX offers 0.373 frames per dollar, while the RX 7900 XT delivers 0.395 frames per dollar. In comparison, the Radeon RX 6800 nails 0.655, and the 6950 XT nails 0.484 frames per dollar. Where are these numbers coming from? Well, as the title states, these are AMD’s own numbers!

AMD Radeon RX GPU Performance Per Dollar

That said, if AMD took the original MSRP of the RX 6950 XT, which was $1099 at launch, its frames per dollar value would have been worse than the two RDNA 3 cards. And that could have made the new AMD Radeon RX GPUs look a little better in AMD’s charts.

Should You Get the New RDNA 3 Cards Now?

One thing that has become somewhat inevitable is that the new generation of graphics hardware is more expensive than the last generation. So, it’s understandable why the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT are priced higher than the previous-gen GPUs.

AMD RX GPUs

Still, who would want to get less bang for the buck by getting new hardware? That’s not how tech progress is supposed to work! Considering that, things are not looking pretty for the latest AMD Radeon RX GPUs. And at the current prices, it is definitely not a good time to get a new AMD GPU.

Closer Look At the Numbers

Taking a closer look at the fine print of AMD’s chart, you will see that the performance/dollar numbers were based on a suite of games. That includes Valorant, GTA V, COD: MW2, and Overwatch.

All the AMD Radeon RX GPUs and the Nvidia GPUs were tested at 1080p at max settings, except the RX 6400. That ran the games in the “Medium” preset. So, you can ignore that card.

Current GPU Performance per Dollar

On the other hand, the chart showed Radeon RX 6700 XT offers the best value. And you can confirm it by digging a little deeper and seeing the results from an independent third-party test. In other words, the claim of the chart about the RX 6700 XT is indeed true! So, from the numbers AMD is offering about their new RDNA, the boards might actually be bad value cards.

It is worth noting that the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4090 offers worse frames/dollar numbers than either of the latest AMD Radeon RX GPUs. And it is not like Nvidia is in the lead.

Basically, if you want the most bang for your buck, you should ignore the current high-end GPUs. Instead, get the best performers of the last gen or get a middle-tier current-gen card, for example, the RTX 4070 Ti.
