Uncovering a Hidden Gem – The Awakened: A Ukrainian-Made Sherlock Holmes Game

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

A brand-new PS5 game that went on sale yesterday generated a lot of buzz. It was built by Ukrainians during the war. The Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is the topic at hand. Despite a few small bugs, this game fulfills its promise.

In the game, Sherlock Holmes is examining an evidence board on Watson’s bed when John Watson arrives at his home. They go for a walk to clear their brains, and while they are walking, Watson informs Holmes about the need for assistance in discovering a colleague’s misplaced servant.

As a result, Holmes and Watson make their way to the colleague’s estate, where the sheriff has given Holmes a case. The case turns out to be an occult crime when he does his investigation. Although saving a man is the main objective of the case, it turns into a probe into occult abusers of others.

We also need to point out that the conversation parts are reduced in the latter chapters, which can make some parts feel forced and one-dimensional. Anyway, it is still an enjoyable experience.

The Gameplay

The main gameplay involves investigating crime scenes, searching for clues, and questioning people to advance the investigation. The side cases first appear to be unrelated, but they provide more details for the main case as a whole. The game demands you to delve into the maps and your discoveries to form conclusions to locate clues and advance the investigation.

One of the main aspects of the game is investigating crime scenes and using your discoveries to advance the plot. You need to determine what happened at each crime scene by selecting the explanation that fits the evidence and questioning suspects based on your research. The game provides you with a lot of freedom, but also gives you on-screen instructions if you make a mistake.

What’s New In The Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

Frogwares has brought a good gameplay loop. One thing that stood out to me is that the game made me care about its mechanics. The mechanics are easy to use and provide a lot of freedom, even suggesting interactions that are far away. The game also provides you with less instructions, forcing you to use your notebook and deductive thinking to solve the case.

At times, I got stuck and had to go back to the game’s journal for tips and shortcuts. The game moves at its own pace but creates a more intimate experience by bringing the customer and material together. Frogwares has created an engaging gaming experience.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics in the game are good, although the character animations are stiff, and their lip movements do not always match their words. Each site is well-designed, giving the impression of a large environment, despite only allowing exploration of certain neighborhoods. This design helps to maintain the player’s attention without making them feel directed in a linear direction.

The voice acting in the game is exceptional. This is also true for Sherlock and Watson, who resemble their book counterparts in both appearance and personality. The dubbing actors performed a great job, and the supporting cast also did a great job portraying their roles with the right amount of zeal and tone for each circumstance.

When characters are in enclosed environments, the game’s audio production captures their voices to simulate the room’s echo, making it noteworthy. The directional audio works well with the game’s visual cues, even in moments when players must follow an echo through a series of caverns. Overall, Frogwares did an excellent job with the game’s graphics and audio, which enhanced the overall immersive experience of playing the game.

The Verdict

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened has some good points, but there are also some issues that might affect your enjoyment of the game. One frustrating problem is the unreliable observation prompts, which can make it hard to progress. Another letdown is the pacing of chapter seven, where a long boat-riding section feels more like filler than engaging gameplay. Although the graphics are great, you might encounter some technical problems like screen pops and camera glitches. Despite these flaws, the game is still enjoyable and merges the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and H.P. Lovecraft. The game’s minor flaws don’t detract too much from its appeal since Frogwares created a game with lots of creative fan service and interesting locations.
