The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip has significantly improved Android games, taking them to the next level. Even the mighty ROG Phone 7, known as a mobile gaming powerhouse, relies on this SoC. However, Qualcomm, the company behind the chip, isn’t satisfied with just enhancing mobile gaming. They are launching a new technology that aims to boost game resolution and performance. This new technology will also minimize battery drainage.

Qualcomm Has Announced GSR for Android Gaming  Android Gaming

Qualcomm announced via blog post that they’re rolling out a new upscaling technology called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR). This new tech aims at maximizing mobile game performance and battery life. The technology is not just for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones. It will also bring improvements to phones with older chips.

Upscaling improves performance and battery life. It works by allowing games to run at lower resolutions without affecting the quality. However, most upscaling techniques currently in use compromise graphics quality by blurring edges and details. They normally use a process called bilinear interpolation (bilerp).

According to Qualcomm, their new GSR technology uses a new single-pass spatial upscaling technique. This technique is optimized for Snapdragon Adreno graphics processing units (GPUs). It is capable of raising resolution, frame rate, and battery life. Most techniques usually require two passes. Therefore, this single-pass system reduces memory usage, bandwidth, latency, and battery usage.

Android games and XR products featuring GSR should start rolling out later this year. Qualcomm has partnered with several companies to bring GSR to popular titles. Such titles include Call of Duty Warzone Mobile, Jade Dynasty: New Fantasy, and Farming Simulator 23 Mobile.

The new technology is likely to impress mobile gaming enthusiasts. With improved graphics and smoother performance, GSR could take mobile gaming to new heights. Hopefully, its impact could be felt across other industries. It is an exciting development from Qualcomm that signals a future where mobile devices are more powerful than ever. Mobile phones will now be able to deliver an immersive gaming experience without sacrificing battery life.
