Vivo Y78 launched globally with Snapdragon 695 and AMOLED display

The global mid-range smartphone market is booming with a lot of competitors fighting for a slice of the market share. Vivo is one of the most relevant players in Europe and Asia with a wide portfolio of Vivo handsets. The Vivo Y-series is the one that comprises low-end and mid-range smartphones from the brand. Today, the brand is bringing a strong contender for this lineup in the form of Vivo Y78.

Today Vivo Singapore revealed the Vivo Y78. As usual for a mid-range phone, it was a quiet launch without much buzz or marketing appeal. However, the phone brings decent specifications like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 and an OLED display. It is worth noting that this Vivo Y78 is not the same one launched in China earlier this month. The new device brings a larger display with a different chipset. It resembles the Vivo Y78+ but is still different.

Vivo Y78 specifications

One of the most appealing details of the Vivo Y78 is its 6.78-inch display. This is an AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. AMOLED screens are finally becoming popular in the mid-range market, and the Vivo Y78 is the latest contender to bring vivid colors and true blacks to this segment. The phone also brings a 20:9 aspect ratio and an under-display fingerprint scanner. The display is slightly curved, adding a premium feel to the smartphone. It’s quite narrow with 7.9 mm thickness and lightweight with just 177 grams.

Vivo had to cut some corners to keep the price appealing. The phone has a plastic body, but the good part is that this is an IP54 body. That rating makes the phone resistant to dust and allows it to withstand some splashes of water.

In terms of optics, the Vivo Y78 is packed with a 64 MP camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS. It also has a 2 MP macro camera on the back and a 2 MP depth shooter. This combo is different from what we usually see on Vivo Y-series smartphones. For selfies and video calls, the phone has a 16 MP shooter tucked inside a centered punch-hole.

The phone brings the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 to the helm. This chipset is aging at this point when we talk about performance, but is decent enough and provides 5G connectivity. The phone brings 8 GB of RAM which is excellent for multi-tasking, and has up to 256 GB Internal Storage. There is no micro SD card slot for further expansion. The phone runs Funtouch OS 13 straight out of the box.

The Vivo Y78 has a 5,000 mAh battery with 44W fast-charging support. The phone comes bundled with an 11V/4A charger and a USB Type-C cable in the box.

Availability and Other details

The phone will sell in Dream Gold and Flare Black with gradient effects. Unfortunately, the pricing info has not been revealed yet. However, we will update this post as soon as the price becomes available.

In related news, Vivo is gearing up to launch the Vivo S17 and S17 Pro in China and more details became available today. Just like the Vivo Y78, these phones may launch globally later as Vivo V28 and V28 Pro.
