PayDay 2 Is Coming To Epic Games, But Drops Support For Linux

PayDay 2 Epic Games

Overkill Software is a Swedish video game developer based in Stockholm. They are best known for their Payday series, a first-person shooter game where players take on the role of criminals planning and executing heists. The Payday series has been praised for its cooperative gameplay, customization options, and soundtrack. PayDay 2 was released on Linux in 2016, making it one of the few AAA games available on the platform. But as of today they’ve removed support for it, so it will no longer see updates on the Native Linux version.

OverKill Ends Linux Support

PayDay 2 is getting a 505MB update that includes fixes for heists, weapons, and mods, as well as a few general tweaks and fixes. Unfortunately, this update also marks the end of support for Linux. They said:

“Note that Linux users will not receive this update or any following updates coming to PC. In addition, Linux players will be unable to matchmake with other PC clients following this update. We tried to find a solution. But ultimately found it unfeasible due to the Linux version being on an older version of the PAYDAY 2 engine”.

The developers of this PlayDay 2 have discontinued native support for Linux. But the game can still be played on Linux using Steam Play Proton. Steam Play Proton is a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux. The game is also Steam Deck Verified, which means that it has been tested and confirmed to work well on the Steam Deck.

PayDay 2 Ends Support for Linux

The reason for the discontinuation of native support is that Linux and Steam Deck together only have a 2% user share on Steam. For many developers, it is not worth the extra time and resources to maintain native support for a platform with such a small user base.

PayDay 2 Is Coming To Epic Games Store

Regardless, Overkill is bringing PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition to the Epic Games Store. In fact, the co-op shooter game is now free to claim until June 15. It will then be replced by Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition and Guacamelee! 2. Although PayDay 2 will be available in Epic Games, it will not be exclusive to the platform. Because it will remain on Steam too. PAYDAY 3 is also planned to be released on Steam.
