Micron unleashes UFS 4.0 storage tech offering double speeds

UFS 4.0

Micron Technology, a company that makes computer memory and storage devices, announced its new UFS 4.0 storage standard. The new technology is used to store information in devices like smartphones and tablets. Micron has sent samples to phone makers and chipset companies to test it out. For now, the storage drives using UFS 4.0 will come in 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB sizes. They will start making lots of these storage drives in the second half of 2023. Hence, it might still take some time before we see phones with the firm’s UFS 4.0 on store shelves.

Is Micron’s new UFS 4.0 storage better than the competition?

Micron UFS 4.0

“Micron’s latest mobile solution tightly weaves together our best-in-class UFS 4.0 technology, proprietary low-power controller, 232-layer NAND, and highly configurable firmware architecture to deliver unmatched performance. Together, these technologies position Micron at the forefront of delivering the performance and low-power innovations our customers need to enable an exceptional end-user experience for flagship smartphones,” said Mark Montierth, corporate vice president and general manager of Micron’s Mobile Business Unit.

It’s faster than Samsung’s standard

The new UFS 4.0 storage standard is going to make mobile devices, like smartphones, even better! It has some really cool improvements that will make things faster and more efficient. Firstly, when you open an app on a device with Micron’s UFS 4.0 storage, it will open 15% faster than before. Hence, you won’t have to wait as long to play your favorite game or use your favorite apps! Moreover, devices with this storage will start up or “boot” 20% faster than older standards. The new storage is also more power efficient, which is really important for making our device’s battery last longer. With UFS 4.0, devices can use 25% less power.

Another cool thing about UFS 4.0 is that it can write information to the storage faster than before. The write bandwidth, which is like how quickly information can be saved, is 100% higher than the previous generation. And the read bandwidth, which is how quickly information can be retrieved, is 75% higher. This means that things will load faster and you won’t have to wait as long for your pictures, videos, or games to load.

Overall, UFS 4.0 is a really great improvement in storage technology. It makes our devices faster, more efficient, and more powerful!

Micron’s UFS 4.0 storage offers up to 4,300 Mbps sequential read speeds and up to 4,000 Mbps sequential write speeds. For comparison, that’s faster than Samsung’s UFS 4.0 standard. Samsung’s model offers 4,200 MB/s sequential read speeds and 2,800 MB/s write speeds. As you can see, Micron’s standard write speeds are significantly faster than Samsung’s standard.

As we’ve told you before, it will be a while until the first devices using Micron’s new standard appear. However, they should bring a significant boost to the performance of mobile devices.

In case you’ve missed it, Micron has been in the middle of China vs US struggle. In a retaliation move, the Chinese government decided to ban Micron in China. You can find more details about this here.
