Apple is known for moving slowly where new technology is concerned. It does not take on something until it is certain that it will work. That practice may now include 200-megapixel (MP) cameras.

Apple Rumored to Be Testing 200MP Camera, iPhone Upgrades Getting Larger

iPhone 17 Plus

According to a new rumor, Apple is actually testing a 200MP camera sensor. It could be an indication that the company now plans to bring higher megapixel cameras to the iPhone. But we have no verified facts yet. We don’t know what sensor Apple is testing and which iPhone model it would be for.

The leak comes from a regular tipster, Digital Chat Station, who posted the news on Weibo in China. He believes Apple is testing the 200MP sensor as the main camera.

Apple’s direct rivals have already adopted 200MP cameras. Samsung, for example, uses a 200MP main camera in Galaxy S Ultra series. It’s included in the Galaxy S25 Edge. The majority of Chinese companies are using 200MP sensors, especially periscope-style zoom cameras in their high-end phones.

Apple may be slower, but it usually focuses on quality over specs. If it does move to 200MP, it could bring big upgrades in photo detail and quality. But we’ll have to wait for more solid information.

The same leaker also dropped hints about Apple’s upcoming iPhone design. Major overhauls are in store in the coming years. The iPhone 17 in late 2025 can get a major redesign at the rear end. A larger camera bump is reported to be the component of the new design.

In 2026, Apple could focus on the front of the phone. The Pro models could feature Face ID under the screen. It would only feature a single teeny hole-punch for the front camera.

Later, in 2027, the iPhone 19 Pro could unveil even more dramatic changes. The front cam could also move under the screen. This would allow for a genuine full-screen iPhone with no cutouts visible.

Naturally, all of this is a rumor. Apple hasn’t made any of this official. But if so, some exciting upgrades are potentially on the horizon.

For the time being, the idea of a 200MP iPhone is appealing. It suggests that Apple is willing to completely upgrade its camera system.
