Samsung’s latest foldables are making a strong start. After their official reveal this month, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 are now breaking pre-order records—at least in Samsung’s homeland of South Korea.

As per a report by ETNews, the 2025 foldable series has already doubled last year’s models’ pre-order sales. That’s a significant leap, given the comparatively sluggish performance of the 2024 series. The surprise twist? The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is taking the lead, outselling the typically more popular Z Flip.

This is a first. Up until this point, Samsung’s Flip series, which has a compact, clamshell design, has outsold the larger, more expensive Fold phones. The Flip had been especially popular with younger customers who wanted a fashionable, stylish phone that could be pocketed. But the new Fold 7 has flipped that on its head.

The Fold 7 now accounts for 60% of overall pre-orders in South Korea. This is for the first time the foldable book-form model has outsold the Flip. The change is credited by analysts to several factors. The shift is driven by the fact that the Fold 7 features a completely new body, which makes it one of the thinnest foldables on the market. It also features larger screens and improved AI capabilities, all of which are drawing customers.

Record Pre-Orders for Samsung Z Fold 7 as Foldables Gain Momentum

Samsung’s generous pre-order promotions are also helping. Consumers are getting more value up front, which helps to justify the premium price of the Fold. Although there was some resistance—namely over Samsung not including S Pen capability—the functionality of the Fold 7 is delivering as promised.

This early success can prove to be a turning point for the foldable phone industry. Consumers have struggled to embrace foldables, often seeing them as too fragile or too expensive. But strong sales such as these may be capable of rewriting the script and building credibility for the category.

Whether it translates globally remains to be seen. But for now, Samsung has reason to celebrate. The Fold 7’s strong debut in South Korea may indicate a bright future for future innovations—like the rumored tri-fold model that could arrive at any time. Samsung may have finally solved the puzzle of foldables.
