A new app called BitChat is offering a different way to chat, no internet or SIM card needed. This fresh idea comes from Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter. Unlike popular apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, BitChat sends messages through Bluetooth instead of the internet.

BitChat

How It Works

BitChat uses what’s called a “Bluetooth mesh network.” This means your message is passed along from one phone to another until it reaches the person you sent it to. Phones nearby act as messengers, but they can’t read what’s being sent. Each message is locked with a strong encryption method known as AES-256-GCM. Only the person you’re chatting with can unlock and read the message.

The app can send messages up to 300 meters (about 328 yards) away from phone to phone. This kind of setup doesn’t need mobile data, Wi-Fi, or even a phone number. It’s a truly offline way to stay in touch.

Built to Beat Censorship

One of BitChat’s biggest goals is to stop governments or other groups from blocking communication. One attractive aspect of this app is that it does not need the internet. Just last month, for a couple of days, Three UK network was down. In such situations, BitChat will work seamlessly. It works even if mobile networks or Wi-Fi are shut down, which means it will be difficult for anyone to censor or spy on your chats.

To keep things private, BitChat doesn’t ask for your phone number, email, or any account details. There’s no way to tie a message to a person, which makes it very hard for anyone to figure out who said what. The app also has useful features like group chats, favourites, and message alerts, just like other messaging apps.

Still in Testing

Right now, BitChat is being tested by about 10,000 people who use iPhones. There’s no set date yet for when the app will be ready for everyone. But if testing goes well, it could soon be a useful tool for people who want to keep their conversations private and uncensored.

Final Thoughts

The new BitChat app is a top-level enhanced privacy messaging app that operates without the use of the internet. Messages are delivered using Bluetooth, thereby avoiding censorship and protecting users’ identities. If launched globally, it could go on to revolutionalize the telecommunication industry.
